Episode 3x8, Flashes Before Your Eyes - Time Jump 1
Back to the Hatch
The hatch alarm is going off, the voice is saying "System failure" and the timer reaches zero. Desmond finds the key and goes below the hatch. He tells Locke, "I'll see you in another life, brother."Things start flying across the room, attracted to the magnet.
Desmond opens the security system, says "I love you, Penny," and turns the key.
He sees flashes of his life on the island. Then he opens his eyes. He is in a puddle of red paint. Penny asks if he's all right and gives him ice.
"What's happening?" he asks.
"Well what's happening is the result of combining ladders, painting the ceiling, and alcohol. Are you okay? Are you nauseous?"
He looks around. "This is my flat."
She says it is, "Although if you want me to feel at home you might start calling it our flat." She holds up her hand. "How many fingers, Des?"
He looks around. Penny tells him to look at her. She wants to know what's wrong. He kisses her and says that nothing is wrong.
Deja Vu
Desmond gets dressed. He stares at a digital clock that reads 1:08. He has trouble with his tie and Penny comes to help him. She says, "You've got some paint on your neck," and tries to scrape it off.She asks how his concussion is and he says, "Severe head injury is a small price to pay to have you move into my humble -- is rat trap accurate?"
She says no and kisses him. "You know you don't really need a job from my father, Des?"
"It's not about the job. I want him to respect me."
"And respect you he shall. But if for some reason he's too daft to see how brilliant you are, it's not the end of the world."
He pauses at her words. "What did you say?" He hears the beeping of the timer in the hatch.
Penny walks over and opens the microwave and the beeping stops. She pulls out a cup and hands it to Desmond. "You okay, love?"
"Just a bit of deja vu."
Charles Widmore
Desmond walks up to a reception desk and says, "Good afternoon. I'm here to see Mr. Widmore.""And you are?" she says.
"Hume. Mr. Desmond Hume."
A delivery man walks up and says, "Hello, love, got a parcel here for 815."
"Excuse me," Desmond says, "what did you say?"
"I said delivery for 815."
Desmond flashes on the numbers in the computer, the execute button, and the timer resetting to 108.
"Mr. Hume," the receptionist says, "Mr. Widmore is ready for you."
In Charles Widmore's office, Desmond looks at a painting of a polar bear. The word "Namaste" is written backwards at the top.
Charles looks over some paperwork. "You didn't tell me you were an actor, Desmond."
"Uh no, it was actually set design for the Royal Shakespeare Company."
"Impressive. You didn't graduate from University?"
"No sir. I had to look after my three brothers after my father--"
"Any military experience?"
"No sir."
He looks at a model sailboat. "She's beautiful, your boat."
"My foundation is sponsoring a solo race around the world," Charles says.
Desmond flashes on being on his sailboat in the storm, seeing the boat in the cove on the island, and seeing Kelvin just after their fight (Ep: 2x23, Live Together, Die Alone).
Not Worthy
"Something wrong?" Charles says."No, no sir."
"Well, Desmond, I'm going to see to it that you have a job in our administrative department. Not the most glamorous job, but it's a start. I'll speak to human resources."
"With all due respect, sir. I haven't come here to ask to interview for a position in your company. I came to ask for your daughter's hand in marriage. We've been together two years now. Pen's moving in and I love her. Your permission would mean everything to me."
"I'm impressed, Hume. A very noble gesture." He gets up and goes to the liquor cabinet. "This is a 60 year MacCutchin, named after Anderson MacCutchin, the esteemed admiral from the Royal Navy. He retired with more medals than any man before or since. Moved to the highlands to see out his remaining years. Admiral MacCutchin was a great man, Hume." Charles puts two glasses on his desk. He pours a small amount into one glass. "This swallow is worth more than you could make in a month. To share it with you would be a waste and a disgrace to the great man who made it. Because you, Hume, will never be a great man."
"Mr. Widmore," Desmond says, "I know I'm not--"
"What you're not, is worthy of drinking my whiskey. How could you ever be worthy of my daughter?"
Charlie
Desmond walks outside and throws his tie. He walks up to a man singing on the street and taking donations. It's Charlie."How do I know you?" Desmond says.
Charlie doesn't know, but says he'll remember if he could get some help. He indicates the guitar case with a sign that says donations accepted.
Desmond flashes on the hatch with the timer going off. Charlie walks in and says, "Can I get some help?"
Back on the street, Desmond says, "You're Charlie."
"Yeah, name's on the sign." The sign reads: MUSICAL STYLINGS OF CHARLIE HIERONYMUS PACE. DONATIONS ACCEPTED.
Desmond flashes to the island. He sees Kelvin in his yellow suit, Kelvin dead, the timer reaching zero, the computer saying system failure, the execute button, and stuff flying towards the magnet in the hatch.
Back on the street he says, "It was in the hatch. I remember seeing you. There was a computer, there was a button. We were on an island."
"We are on an island, mate, this is England."
"No it was real! I remember!"
"Okay, okay." Charlie turns to those standing around. "This is why we don't do drugs."
"No, I remember. This all happened before! Today happened before! I remember! He said I wasn't worthy, and then I came down and I took off my tie and then I lost my tie and then Penny said where was it, and then it started to rain and then--"
It begins to rain. Desmond looks up at the rain while others take cover.
