"The Constant" Theories and Observations

Episode 4x5

Complete Episode Guide: The Constant Guide

The Constant Theories

  • Desmond says, "I'm not here. This isn't happening," when he's on the freighter. In episode 4x1, The Beginning of the End, Charlie says, "I am dead. But I'm also here." Charlie may have done some kind of time traveling before he was dead in order to see Hurley in the mental hospital.

  • Lost fan Lauren has come up with the reason Desmond was affected by the hatch implosion, while Locke, Eko, and Charlie weren't affected the same way. I think she's right: Eko, John, and Charlie weren’t affected by the hatch implosion like Desmond was, because Desmond was sacrificing himself. He thought he was going to die, but turned the key anyway. Like Charlie - when he visited Hurley in Santa Rosa (Ep: 4x1, The Beginning of the End) he told Charlie that he was dead, but he was ‘also here’. By knowingly letting himself be killed, he’s some sort of cosmic tool, like Desmond. And something like Ms. Hawking.

  • Lost fan Regula points out that based on what is happening with George Minkowski and those around him thinking he is crazy, this is probably what happened to Danielle Rousseau's team shortly after coming to the island. This time-jumping could be "the illness" referred to by Kelvin and the reason he had Desmond medicate with the injections.

  • Daniel is known as a head case, but I think he's super smart. Too smart for his own good, sometimes.

  • Richard Alpert may be unstuck from time as well with Ben as his constant, though that wouldn't explain why he didn't age.

  • George says he can't get back and then he dies. Without a constant, George wasn't able to come back to the future.

  • It seems like Desmond knows that things are fixed as he walks away from Penny's house after getting her phone number, because he smiles.

Observations from The Constant

  • Daniel does his experiments without anything protective on his head.
