I think Locke's dad was on the plane and he's the price for Sawyer's work. Why wasn't a James Ford missing from the list of passengers? Because he was never on the plane. He just stood there in front of the wreck and smoked a cigarette. Maybe he was just there as an insurance if Ethan was discovered. Maybe that was the plan in the first place. If it's true, that Sawyer is an Other, then maybe he fell a little too much for Kate. That could be the reason why he (along with Jack and Kate) were imprisoned by the Others, just to get him back in line. Then, when he afterwards got a little too friendly with the survivors of the crash, they managed to serve him the "real" Sawyer (who was held a prisoner until then) on a silver platter, just to remind him, why he's here.
Question is, why he got so "back to the old Sawyer" afterwards? Maybe that has something to do with his daughter.
