In a flashback, Ray finds Kate sleeping in his barn and then offers her a job. When it's time for her leave the job, he drives her to the station, but he had called the Marshal because he needs the reward money. After an accident, Kate has a chance to get away, but she stops to make sure that Ray is okay, which is how the Marshal catches her.
