As Danielle takes people to The Black Rock, she mentions that they have to go through the Dark Territory, which is where it all began, where her team got infected and where Montand lost his arm. - Episode 5x4, The Little Prince
Montand's team washed up on the shore of the island in a life raft after pulling Jin out of the water. Montand seems angry at Jin because he doesn't know how he got there. - Episode 5x5, This Place is Death
Montand says that the signal where the numbers are coming from is strong, and has to be somewhere on the island. He wants to find it. Danielle talks Jin into going with them to the radio tower, but on the way, one of their team members is lost. Montand says that's why you shouldn't bring women and she's probably off chasing a butterfly.The monster comes and grabs Montand and drags him to a hole. Everyone grabs on to Montand, but he is dragged into the hole when his arm is ripped off. They hear him from below saying that the smoke is gone and he's hurt and needs help.
The others climb down to help him, but Jin won't let Rousseau go because she's pregnant.
