Paulo remembers becoming a chef for Howard L. Zukerman so that he and Nikki can steal Mr. Zukerman's diamonds.After the plane crash, Paulo wonders why Nikki is so obsessed with the bag of diamonds. He finds the diamonds, but doesn't tell her because he is afraid they won't be together if she doesn't need him to find the diamonds.
He starts to bury them on the beach, but Locke tells him that the beach is eroding away, so he goes to The Pearl Station that he and Nikki had found while they were searching for the diamonds. He hides the diamonds in the toilet tank. While there, he overhears Ben and Juliet talking about Jack doing the surgery.
Nikki finds out that he has the diamonds and paralyzes him with a spider bite. He sees a spider crawling up her leg, but can only warn her with his eyes. She gets bit and runs off.
The two are buried alive, side by side, in a grave for two.
