In a flashback, Kelvin shows Sayid a video of what Sayid's commanding officer has done in order to get Sayid to agree to torture his commander. Kelvin gives him a box of torturing tools. This is the first time Sayid tortures anyone. He gets the information and gives it to Kelvin. Kelvin later releases Sayid. - Episode 2x23, Live Together, Die Alone
In Desmond's flashback, we see what happened with Kelvin. Kelvin picked up an almost drowned Desmond from the beach and took him to the hatch. He showed Desmond the Orientation film, and taught him how to the push the button. He never let him outside, though.Kelvin would go outside to explore, then they would fake a lockdown so that Kelvin could draw a diagram of the island's stations on the door. Kelvin tells Desmond that his partner, Radzinsky, figured out how to fake a lockdown, but Radzindsky later shot himself.
One day Desmond followed Kelvin and discovered that Kelvin was going to leave the island on Desmond's boat. They argue and fight and Desmond accidentally knocks Kelvin's head against the rocks. Desmond believes that Kelvin is dead.
