Karl is in the cage across from Sawyer's cage and breaks out. He breaks Sawyer out and tells Sawyer to run, but they are both captured. Karl is beaten up and made to apologize to Sawyer, then the Others take him away instead of returning him to the cage. - Episode 3x7, Not in Portland
Kate and Sawyer go with Alex to free Karl. They find him in a room filled with loud music. He is being forced to watch a screen with images and words flashing by. He is really out of it and Sawyer has to carry him to the boat. He comes to long enough to tell Alex that he loves her, but then he has to sleep. He sleeps on the boat as Sawyer and Kate row toward the main island. - Episode 3x9, Stranger in a Strange Land
Sawyer asks Kate what she thinks will happen to them if they go back for Jack. Karl, still out-of-it, says, "Kill you. God loves you as he loved Jacob."Once they reach shore, Karl seems more with it and tells them that the Others don't live on the smaller island, that's just where they work on projects. He says that he and Alex used to lay in his backyard and make up names for the constellations.
Sawyer finds him crying in the jungle and tells him to go after Alex.

Alex goes to where Karl is hiding and tells him to go to the Losties and warn them that the Others are coming to kill them.Karl goes and tells the Losties. He also tells them about Juliet, but they already know.

Ben wants to talk to Alex, to tell her something, but Alex doesn't want to listen. Karl defends Alex, but Ben baits him and Karl pulls a gun on Ben. Sawyer tells him to take it easy and to take a walk.Later, Karl tries to help Rousseau take Alex away when Locke is going to shoot Ben.

Ben tells Alex that the people on the freighter are coming for him and they will use her to get to him. He tells her to go to the temple. Karl and Rousseau think it's a good idea, but Karl wonders why they can't take everyone. Ben says it's just for them. Karl, Alex, and Rousseau head to the temple with the map Ben gave them.They stop to take a break and Karl tells Alex that he has a bad feeling. Then he is shot and killed.
