Michael and Walt's mom, Susan, are not married. Susan moves to Amsterdam for a new job and eventually marries her boss, Brian Porter. She has Brian adopt Walt. After Susan's death, Brian tells Michael that he will have to come get Walt in Sydney and bring him home and raise him. Brian says that "bad things happen" when Walt is around.
