In flashbacks, Ben remembers meeting Annie at Dharma registration. She is about his age and offers him a candy bar.The two attend school together and when there is an explosion, Annie takes Ben and tells him that it's just the hostiles, and they will be okay.
For his birthday, Annie gives Ben two wooden dolls. One is her and one is Ben. She takes the Ben doll and tells him that now they never have to be away from each other.
