Most Prominent Island Connection: Jack

Relationship: He is Jack's father and the reason for Jack being on the plane. He was the Chief of Surgery at St. Sebastian hospital, making him Jack's boss.

  • Claire: Christian is Claire's biological father, but until her late teens she believed her father was dead. Even after meeting him, she still never knew his name.

  • Sawyer: Christian and Sawyer spoke in an Australia bar (Ep: 1x16, Outlaws). Later, Sawyer tells Jack that his father was proud of him (Ep: 1x23, Exodus Part 1).

    Christian gives the young Jack a lecture about not getting involved in other peoples' business after Jack saves his friend from a bully. When Jack is grown, his mother tells him that he must go find his father. His father is missing and it's because of what Jack did. Jack goes to Australia and discovers that his father is dead. He had drank himself to death.

    Jack frantically works to save a woman in the OR, but is unsuccessful. His father tells him to call it, but Jack tells Christian to call it. Christian had been operating under the influence and had cut an artery. Jack tells the medical board what really happened and Christian stares at him in shock.

    Sawyer is in an Australian bar drinking after being unable to kill the man whom he believed to be responsible for the death of Sawyer's parents. She watches as he fights with a woman over his daughter, and Ana-Lucia breaks up the fight. He asks her to go into a bar with him in Australia, but she refuses and he goes in alone.
  • Episode 3x1, A Tale of Two Cities
    When he discovers Jack trying to find out who Sarah is having an affair wtih, he tells Jack to just let it go. Jack follows him to a hotel, and during a support meeting they argue and Jack winds up in jail. After 50 days sober, Christian begins drinking again.

  • Episode 3x12, Par Avion
    Christian shows up at the death bed of Claire's mom. He reveals to Claire that he is her father, but Claire wants nothing to do with him and doesn't even get his name. He pays for all of Claire's mother's medical bills.

  • Episode 4x1, The Beginning of the End
    When Hurley looks into Jacob's cabin, it looks like Christian is sitting in Jacob's rocking chair.

  • Episode 4x10, Something Nice Back Home
    In his flash forward, Jack thinks he sees Christian Shephard walk past. Later, he does see him and Christian says his name, but disappears when another doctor talks to Jack.

    On the island in the middle of the night, Claire wakes to see Christian holding Aaron. She follows him into the jungle.

  • Episode 4x11, Cabin Fever
    Locke sees Christian sitting in Jacob's cabin. Christian says he's not Jacob, but he can speak on his behalf. Christian asks if Locke knows why he's there and when Locke says he was chosen, Christian says that's right. Locke wants to know why Claire is there and Christian says they don't have time for that, the freighter people are already on their way. He says Locke needs to ask the one question that matters. Locke asks how he can save the island.

  • Episode 4x13, There's No Place Like Home Part 2
    Christian appears to Michael and tells him he can go now. Then the freighter blows up.

  • Episode 5x5, This Place is Death
    Christian is in the room with the wheel and tells Locke he is there to help him. When Locke came to see him in the cabin, Christian had told him that he needed to move the island, but instead Ben did it. He was here now, though, so he has to turn the wheel. As Locke turns the wheel, Christian says, "Say hello to my son."

  • Episode 5x7, The Life and Death of Jeremy Bentham
    Locke deduces that when Christian says to say hello to his son he is referring to Jack, because he can't be Sayid's father and he's not Hurley's father. He tells Jack, but Jack says his father has been dead for three years.

  • Episode 5x9, Namaste
    When Frank and Sun find where they used to process Dharma recruits, Christian is there. He shows them a picture of Jack, Kate, and Hurley as new Dharma recruits in 1977 and tells Sun that she has a long journey ahead of her.

  • Episode 5x16, The Incident
    In a flashback, Jack remembers when he did his first major surgery and Christian embarrassed him by telling him to take a deep breath, count to five, and then fix the dural sack that he had accidentally cut.

    Later, Jack confronted Christian and said that Christian doesn't believe him, but he needs his medical team to. Christian says, "Are you sure I'm the one who doesn't believe in you?"
