Flashbacks in Italics
John Locke remembers the moments immediately following the crash. He is laying on his back with a gash above and below his right eye. He slightly lifts his head and looks at his sock-clad foot. He wiggles his toes and then reaches for his shoe.
Hearing barking, Locke's thoughts return to the present. It's nighttime and most of the survivors are sleeping, until the incessant barking wakes them all. The dog is focused on the fuselage.
The survivors hear someone rummaging around and Jack says, "It's Sawyer."
"Right behind ya, Jackass," Sawyer says. They shine a flashlight inside, and two glowing eyes shine back at them. Three wild boars charge out, pass the survivors, and disappear into the jungle. Locke explains that they were attracted by the dead bodies that have been baking in the fuselage for the last four days.
The Bodies
The next day, they decide that something has to be done about the bodies. If they bury them, the boars will dig them up. Jack steps up and makes the decision -- the bodies must be burned. Sayid and Kate seem put out by that idea and Sayid, especially, feels the bodies deserve better than that.Sayid does not want to burn the bodies with "no regard for their wishes, their religions."
"We don't have time to sort out everyones' Gods," Jack says.
"Really?" Charlie says. "Last I heard we are positively made of time."
The Last of the Peanuts
Kate finds Sayid working on something that will help locate the power source where the French woman's signal is coming from.In the distance, Locke looks into a metal case.
A scuffle begins between Hurley and Sawyer, because Sawyer has the last of the peanuts and he's not sharing. A panic rises over the lack of food. Sawyer sits down in one of two connected airplane seats and asks how they're going to find food. Suddenly a knife flies through the air and sticks in the seat next to Sawyer. Everyone looks at Locke who appears to have thrown the knife.
Jack hands Locke the knife. "You either have very good aim, or very bad aim."Locke says they will hunt boar and he reveals a steel box, which he had on the plane. He opens it to reveal a bunch of knives.
"Who is this guy?" Hurley asks.
Locke's Flashback - Colonel Locke
Locke answers the phone and a voice says, "Colonel Locke, is this line secure?"Locke looks around and says, "Line secure."
"The target area is secure and maneuvers are a go for 1300 hours." We see more of the room and realize Locke is in a work cubicle. His boss yells at him for making personal calls and sarcastically calls him, "Colonel."
A Need for Food
Michael prepares to go on the boar hunt with Locke. Walt wants to go and Michael tells him no. Michael manages to communicate to Sun that he wants her to look after the boy, and she agrees.Claire collects personal effects of the dead to use for a memorial service during the burning. She wants Jack to deliver the eulogy, but he refuses.
Boone points out Rose to Shannon. He says that she has been sitting by herself and hasn't eaten anything since the crash. "What's a four-letter word for 'I don't care'?" she asks.
"I think someone should go talk to her," Boone says.
"I nominate you, Captain America," Shannon says.Boone reminds Shannon that she would starve without his help. She assures him that she can take care of herself just fine. He challenges her to get her own food.
