Sawyer Reads the Messages
Michael and Jin mess with the radar equipment. Sawyer reads the messages from the bottle.Walt tells him the messages are private.
"Yep," Sawyer says. "I, for one, never knew how much Tracy missed her hubby and 2 kids back in Fresno. Yet she's sleeping next to good old Scott to keep her warm at night."
"That's Steve. Scott's dead."
"Whatever," Sawyer says. "It's alright, Gazoo, we've got to keep ourselves entertained. Who the hell is Hugo and how's he got a 160 million dollars to leave to his mom?"
Walt asks how Sawyer would feel if Walt read his note and Sawyer says he didn't write one. "The only letter I ever wrote is to the man I'm going to kill."
Sayid and Charlie Go for the Guns
As Charlie and Sayid run for the guns, Sayid explains that Rousseau is going to the black smoke. Her own child was taken 16 years ago. They took something from her, and now she believes she has something that they want."She's making a trade?" Charlie asks and Sayid thinks so.
Claire wants to go with them, but they tell her she can't. "Get him back, Charlie," Claire says. "Get Aaron back."
Charlie promises he will.
Michael's Flashback - Walt's Not Supposed to be His
Michael and Walt sit in the airport. Walt plays a hand held video game. Michael asks if he wants something to eat, but Walt doesn't answer. He wonders if Walt is worried about Vincent, but again, Walt doesn't answer.Michael says he has to call work and goes over to the pay phone. Into the phone he says, "No, I live in a studio apartment. I've got to be out the door in the morning for work at 5 a.m. Who's going to watch him? How's he going to get to school? What's he going to do after school?
"I can't do this, Ma. You know, I was - listen, I was thinking - I was thinking maybe you could take him. Look, Ma, if it's a question of money." Locke goes by in his wheelchair.
"What am I supposed to do with him? He's not supposed to be mine. That was never part of the plan. Yeah, I - thanks a lot." He hangs up and turns around to discover Walt standing there. "Hey, man, I was, uh-"
"I need new batteries," Walt says.
Sawyer Gets the Rudder
Michael asks Walt if he wants to drive the raft, and Walt is excited at the chance. As Walt steers the raft, he asks Michael, "How come you and my mom didn't stay together?"Michael says that they tried, but it just didn't work out. Walt wants to know why he never saw Michael and he says, "Because your mom didn't want me to see you. She did what she thought was best for you."
"She was wrong," Walt says.
Michael smiles. The raft hits a log and the rudder comes loose. Jin yells, "Rudder! Rudder!"
Sawyer rips off his shirt and shoes and dives in after the rudder. Jin and Michael take the sail down, but Sawyer is quite a ways from the raft. They toss him a rope, which he wraps around the rudder, and they pull him in.
Michael thanks Sawyer and hands him his shirt. Michael is annoyed that he found a gun in Sawyer's shirt.
Keep a Safe Distance
Jack gives instructions of how they will walk. He will lead then Kate, then Hurley, then Locke. Locke says they need to keep a safe distance from each other. Jack says if they see anything Kate and Locke will put down their packs and they will all run."Like the security system that eats people?" Hurley asks."Yeah, like that." Jack says. "Okay let's do this."
Punishment?
The group finally arrives at the cave and Shannon ends up right next to where Boone died. "He died bravely," Sun says and Shannon thanks her.Sun asks, "Do you think we're being punished for all the things we did before? The secrets we kept, the lies we told?"Shannon wants to know by who and Sun says, "Fate."
Claire says, "No one's punishing us. There's no such thing as fate."
Charlie Finds Heroin
Charlie has trouble keeping up with Sayid, but he wants to go on. Sayid forces him to take a break. They stop where the small plane is and Charlie asks if it's where Boone fell.Sayid explains that the plane was up higher and fell with Boone in it. Charlie asks about the plane and Sayid says they were drug runners. He picks up a statue and drops it at Charlie's feet. It breaks open to reveal the heroin baggies. Sayid picks up his pack and moves on.
