They embrace.Sayid says he's traveling and asks what Essam is doing in Sydney. Essam is a tree cutter. His wife had died, killed by a stray bomb. Essam invites Sayid to come over so they can catch up.
At Essam's apartment, he brings Sayid tea. Two other men are there playing a video game. Sayid asks if they all live together and Essam says that Sydney is expensive.
Sayid notices the smoke detector. The men are smoking and the detector has not gone off. He holds a cigarette to the smoke detector. He pulls a bugging device out and puts it in a glass of tea. One of the men wants to know who he is and Essam explains that he was Republican Guard.
"Perhaps it's not happenstance that you and Essam met at the Mosque. Perhaps it is fate," one of the men says.

Shannon, with tears in her eyes, watches him go.Shannon finds Sayid. "You asked if you could do anything for me," she says. Anything, he says.
"John Locke killed my brother," Shannon says. "Will you do something about that?"
Jack and Kate are in one of the tents. Jack has the key to the case with the guns in it around his neck. Kate gives him juice and tells him to drink the whole thing to get his blood sugar up. Jack gets up to find Locke, but he staggers and lays back down. Kate admits that she crushed up sleeping pills and put them in Jack's drink.
At the caves, Locke removes his shirt and washes it in the waterfall. Walt walks by and Locke waves, but Walt looks frightened and keeps walking. Sayid approaches and asks how Locke got the scar on his back. "War wound," Locke says.
Sayid thinks the wound looks more like a surgical scar. He asks about the radio in the plane. "Some of its parts might work in the transmitter I'm building for the raft. If you'd be willing to take me?"
Sayid Interrogates Locke
As he walks with Locke through the jungle, Sayid fires question after question about the plane and how they found it. Locke admits that they weren't hunting, but says that they were exploring and came upon it accidentally. Locke realizes that he's being interrogated."Why would I interrogate you, John?"
"Jack called me a liar in front of every man, woman, and child I've come to know over the past month. Maybe there's a part of you that thinks maybe there isn't a plane out here at all."
"I know when I'm being lied to," Sayid says. "There's a plane."
Sayid's Flashback - Martyr

The agents ask if Essam knows were the C-4 is and Sayid says no.
They want Sayid to talk his friend into going through with the bombing so that they can find the C-4. Sayid refuses.
"Your girlfriend is an Iraqi living abroad with a record of insurgency," the agent says. "Wouldn't it be terrible if she got picked up as an enemy combatant, Sayid?"
