Hurley, Don't Move!Hurley continues to follow the cable. He hears buzzing flies and looks up to see a boar caught in a rope trap with a piece of flesh missing. He takes a few more steps and hears a click. He's standing on some kind of metal plate.
"Don't move," Sayid says, coming into view with Jack and Charlie. "You're standing on a pressure trigger. If you take your weight off, it will release that." Hurley looks up to see a bunch of pointy sticks bundled together.
Sayid tells Charlie to find something to replace Hurley's weight. "How we going to do that?" Charlie wants to know.
"I can get out of the way," Hurley says. "I'm spry."Hurley jumps forward, the sticks swing down, but miss him.
Jack asks what Hurley is doing out there and Hurley says he's going to get the battery. Sayid says they can all go, but Sayid will lead.
Hurley's Flashback - LeonardHurley is at a hospital. "Lenny. His name is Lenny, or Leonard," he tells a nurse.
"But you don't know his last name," the nurse says.
Hurley says that he just needs to talk to him for five minutes. He notices a guy climbing a latter to change a light bulb. "Dude, do not do that right now! Leave the bulb for another time, man." The man looks scared and leaves.
A doctor comes out and says, "Hugo?"
"Oh, hey, Doc."
Hurley walks with the doctor into the common room of the mental institution. "I don't remember you and Leonard being that close."
"Yeah, well, we hung," Hurley says and the doctor leaves him alone with Lenny, who keeps repeating 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42.
Hurley talks to him for a bit then asks what the numbers mean. Lenny continues to recite the numbers. Hurley goes on to say that he thinks the numbers are cursed and did they do something to Lenny to get him in here? Lenny continues his chanting until Hurley says that he's been cursed ever since he used the numbers to win the lottery.
Lenny says, "You used those number to play the lottery?"
Hurley says he did and Lenny says, "Well, you shouldn't have done that. You've opened the box." Lenny gets more agitated and says, "It doesn't stop. You've got to get away from those numbers." Lenny is so upset that an orderly comes to take him away.
As Lenny is taken away, Hurley asks where he got those numbers. Lenny got them from Sam Toomey who lives in Kalgoorlie, Australia.
The BridgeHurley, Sayid, Jack, and Charlie follow the cable, but it goes down a hole in the ground. Charlie spots a rickety bridge and wonders how it got there.
Hurley immediately crosses the bridge, while everyone is yelling for him to stop. He makes it across, so Charlie figures he can make it across, but as he gets almost to the end, the bridge starts to fall. Charlie jumps and makes it to the other side.
Jack tells them to stay put, that he and Sayid will find a way around the large gorge. Hurley doesn't like that idea and tells them to stay put, that he and Charlie will continue on the trail. Charlie tells him he's "acting like a bloody lunatic."
Hurley's Flashback - Mrs. Sam ToomeyHurley is in the middle of nowhere and knocks on the door of a house. An older woman answers and Hurley asks for Sam Toomey. Sam has been dead for four years, but she is his wife.
Hurley tells her that her husband worked with a guy he knows, Leonard Sims.
"That's right," she says. "They served together in the U.S. Navy."
Hurley asks about the numbers and she says, "Sam and Leonard were stationed at a listening post monitoring long wave transmissions out of the Pacific. Boring job. Sam hated it, nothing to do but listen to static night after night. 'Til one night, about 16 years ago, there's something in the static, a voice comes through, a voice repeating those numbers over and over again. A couple of days later we're at the fair in Kalgoorlie and some wally there has got this jar, must have been big as a pony, and it's filled to the rim with beans. Fella's offering 50 grand to anyone able to guess how many beans are in that jar, within 10."
Hurley says, "Sam used the numbers?"
"Yep, the answer was exact, to the bean. So we won the money. On the way home a pick-up truck blows a tire on the highway, hits us head on. Lost my leg that night."
He asks about Sam and she says that he didn't even get a scratch and that from then on he believed that anything bad that happened around them was because of him and the numbers. He moved them out there to try and make it stop, but it didn't stop until he put a shotgun in his mouth and pulled the trigger.
Hurley says he believes he's under the same curse, but she doesn't believe in curses and says, "You make your own luck, Mr. Reyes."
