"Whatever the Case May Be" Recap

Part 3

By Bonnie Covel, About.com

Kate's Flashback - Maggie

Kate's bank robber boyfriend calls her Maggie and roughs her up to make it look good, then drags her back out among the others. He threatens to shoot her if the bank manager doesn't open the vault, and the manager finally agrees and opens it.

The Key

Jack and Kate have the corpse uncovered and Jack rolls him a little so that Kate can get the wallet out. She opens it to nothing but maggots and throws it. Jack picks it up and opens it. Kate looks discouraged that there is nothing inside. Jack tells her to open her hand, and when she does, there is the key.

Completely Useless

Sayid is agitated because Shannon's translations don't make any sense. She gets upset saying that she told him she wasn't too good at French. She also points out that Rousseau may be a little crazy after 16 years alone on the island.

Sayid says that it was a mistake asking for Shannon's help and she storms off saying, "Yeah, haven't you heard? I'm completely useless!"

Jack asks Sawyer for the case and threatens to withhold Saywer's antibiotics until he gets the case. Sawyer asks if she told Jack what's in it and Jack says no.

"Hope you got yourself some jaws-of-life back in cave-town," Sawyer says. "That's what it's going to take to pop this bitch."
Sawyer says it figures that Kate got him to do her dirty work. "I know you think you're doing her a favor," Sawyer says, "but however she talked you into doing this? She lied, brother." He hands over the case.

Kate's sitting on the beach and Jack comes with the case and says that they are going to open it together.

Kate's Flashback - Kate Shoots

The manager opens the vault and then asks that they let "the girl" go. The boyfriend takes off his mask and says that Maggie was the mastermind behind the plan. She picked the bank, she picked the vault. The manager looks hurt.

The boyfriend points the gun at the manager and Kate says that no one was supposed to get hurt. She swipes a gun from one of the other robbers and points it at the boyfriend. He doesn't believe she'll do it.

"You shoot, I shoot," Kate says.
She shoots him in the leg. She grabs his gun and shoots the other two bank robbers, wounding them. "You shot me," one of the masked men says. "Shut up, Jason," Kate says.

She demands that the manager let her into the safety deposit room and opens box number 815. She has one key and needs his other key. Inside the box she pulls out a small green envelope.

Jack and Kate Open the Case

Jack and Kate are alone in the jungle with the case. Before he opens it, Jack asks if there is anything she wants to tell him. She says nothing, and they open the case. Everything she said would be in there is there, plus a large brown envelope marked "Personal Effects". Inside the envelope is the small green envelope from the bank. Jack hands it to Kate asking if that's what she's looking for.

She opens the envelope and pulls out a small toy plane. "What's that?" Jack asks. She explains that it belonged to the man she loved. Jack asks her to stop lying and they get into a heated argument.

"It belonged to the man I killed!" Kate says.

Watching

Shannon approaches Sayid and tells him that she remembered a French song and that's what the translations were. She sings it to Sayid as Boone watches from the trees.

From afar, Jack watches Kate by the fire staring at the toy plane, turning it over and over in her fingers.
