Flashbacks in Italics

At the caves, Hurley tells Jack that Ethan Rom isn't on the manifest. Jack instantly feels something is wrong and takes off into the jungle, followed by Locke.

Locke spots Claire's backpack on the ground. He studies the footprints and concludes that they were dragged away.

"How does one man drag off two people, one of them pregnant?" Jack asks.
Locke doesn't care about how, he just wants to know why. Jack yells for Charlie and Claire, but Locke asks that he be quiet in case whoever took them is still around. Locke suggests they hurry back to the caves and form a search party, but Jack insists Locke tell him which way they went, and then Jack runs off by himself in the direction of the footprints.

Jack's Flashback - Time of Death

Jack is in the OR frantically trying to save a woman. The Chief, Dr. Christian Shephard, says, "Call it." Jack continues working. "It's over, Jack."

Jack strips off his mask and snaps, "You call it."

Go South

Kate reports to Locke that no one on the beach has seen Claire and Charlie. She and Boone decide to go with Locke. Walt suggests bringing Vincent, and Michael volunteers to go, but Locke says that will just slow them down and suggests that since Locke's party will go North, Michael's party should go south.

Meanwhile, Jack runs through the jungle looking for any signs of Claire and Charlie.

Jack's Flashback - Shaky Hands

Jack looks down at the woman he was unable to save. The Chief is upset that Jack took over his surgery. Jack says he had to because one of the nurses came and got him because the Chief's hands were shaky and he cut an artery. "How many drinks did you have at lunch, Dad?" Jack asks.

Circling

Locke, Kate, and Boone find Jack. "Good thing you were going in a circle. Not much of a search grid, but we never would have found you otherwise," Locke says. Locke encourages Jack to go back to the caves and take care of Sayid.

"I hunted with Ethan," Locke says, "spent time with him, and never sensed anything off."

Locke blames himself and points out that Ethan knows more about hunting and tracking than Locke does. He wants Jack to go back so that something doesn't happen to the only doctor on the island. But Jack refuses to go back.

Second Class Citizen

Michael complains to Hurley that Locke treats him like a second class citizen. Walt defends Locke and tells Michael he should listen to him. "Mr. Locke is a warrior," Walt says. "He can hunt, he can track stuff, and he's the only one who brought knives."

Michael leaves to go South to look for Charlie and Claire.

"Back home, I'm known as something of a warrior myself," Hurley says.

Tape and Prints

Jack, Kate, Boone, and Locke find one of the pieces of tape that Charlie had wrapped around his finger. They also find a trail of footprints that lead in a different direction. Locke thinks they should stay together, but Jack overrules and he and Kate follow the tape trail while Locke and Boone follow the prints.

Lying About Name

Walt talks to Sawyer about Claire and Charlie and tells him Ethan took them. Sawyer wants to know who Ethan is and Walt says his name wasn't on the manifest.

"Ever think he might have lied about his name?" Sawyer says. Walt says it's stupid for someone to lie about their name. "Alrighty, Tattoo," Sawyer says, "where do you think Ethan came from?"

Walt tells Sawyer that Sayid says they are not alone on the island.

"Sayid's back?" Sawyer says.
