Appendix
Inside his shelter, Jack takes some pills. Juliet walks in. "I hate being sick," he says."What do you think it is?"
"It's food poisoning."
"What makes you think that?"
"I've got some cramping, dehydrated, nausea."
"I respectfully disagree."
"Do you?"
"You want to lift your shirt up?"
Jack hesitates and she says, "If it's food poisoning, you've got nothing to worry about." She pushes on the side of his stomach and he winces. "It's your appendix, Jack. When did the pain start?"
"Yesterday."
"Has it ruptured?"
"Not yet."
"Well, I guess we're just going to have to take it out."
The List
Juliet has a list on a tablet. She asks Sun, “Do you remember where the medical station is or don't you?”“Yes, I remember,” Sun says.
“These are the instruments I need you to bring back. You'll find them in the drawers in the exam room.”
“Clamps, sutures, Juliet I don’t know what these look like,” Sun says.
“I can help you,” Daniel says. “I’m familiar with surgical instruments.”
“I thought you were a physicist,” Juliet says.
“Yeah, well, I’ve done some animal autopsies too. So if-”
“No,” Jin interrupts.
“We can’t trust them,” Sun says.
Charlotte scoffs. “See Dan, I told you. They’re convinced we’re trying to kill them. Might as well keep playing the part.”
“Damn it, Charlotte, that right there, that, your attitude, your very bad attitude, is exactly why they don’t trust us. Come on." He turns to Juliet. "Juliet, please. Don’t blame us for this, for whatever is happening. We’re scientists, we don’t want anyone to get hurt, we just want to help. Please let us help.”
Juliet rips the paper from the tablet and hands it to Daniel. She hands Jin a gun. "Either of them tries to run, shoot them in the leg."
Jin takes the gun and Juliet turns to Sun. "Get back here as fast as you can."
"Okay," Sun says.
"Thank you," Daniel says.
Juliet turns to everyone else. "We need to create a sterile environment. Find a hard surface, wash it down, gather as many tarps as you can." Juliet walks away.
"Hey, Juliet," Kate says. "If everything we need is at the medical station, then why don't we just bring Jack there?"
"Because if we move him, there's a good chance that his appendix will rupture. And if that happens, he's going to die." She walks away.
Restraining Order
Taking a break from their hike, Miles watches Claire from afar. Sawyer catches him and says, "Don't even think about it.""What?"
"Don't look at her. Don't talk to her. Don't mess with her. You got a restraining order, 20 feet."
"What are you? Her big brother?"
"No. I'm the guy who's going to put a boot in your face unless you say, 'Yeah, I get you.'"
"Yeah, I get you." Miles shakes his head.
Getting Sick on the Island
Bernard moves a large board into place and Rose brings over a bucket of water and starts to wash the board with a rag.Bernard sees that she is upset and says, "Honey, I'm sure that Jack is going to be okay. An appendectomy is just about the most common kind of surgery there is."
"That's not what I was thinking. I was thinking, why did he get sick?"
"Why? It's just bad luck."
"The day before we're supposed to be rescued the person that we rely on the most suddenly comes down with a life threatening condition and you chalk it up to bad luck?"
"Well what are you saying? That Jack did something to offend the Gods? People get sick, Rose."
"Not here," she says. "Here they get better."
Shaving a Man's Stomach
Juliet leans over Jack and shaves his stomach.
“When was the last time you did this?” Jack says.
"An appendectomy or shaving a man’s stomach?” Juliet asks.
Jack laughs.
“In my residency," Juliet says. "I did a lot of them back then."
"Then you know the incision needs to be two inches lower than where you're shaving."
"I'm just cleaning the area. Thank you."
"I want to talk you through it. I don't want to be unconscious. We can use the Lidocaine to numb the area and then I can watch the procedure and help you out."
"And how are you going to watch when you're flat on your back with my hand in your abdominal cavity?"
"We can use a mirror and Kate can hold it."
"If someone is going to be in there, shouldn't it be someone with medical experience and not someone-"
"No. I want it to be Kate."
"Okay."
Jack's Flash Forward - A Call From Santa Rosa
Jack walks down the hospital hallway talking with a woman. "Don't worry, Mrs. Baronberg, you're in good hands.""Thank you."
"I'll see you tomorrow at 5 a.m. And remember, no solid food."
After saying goodbye, Jack sees his father, Christian Shephard, walk by.
"Jack," a woman says. "Jack?"
He turns and looks at her. "Will you take a look at this x-ray?" she asks. "It's in the L-4. Tell me what you think."
The receptionist says, "Dr. Shephard, there's a call for you. It's a Doctor Stillman from Santa Rosa hospital. Says it's about a friend of yours."
