Flashbacks in Italics
Juliet sits in an office. She looks around. A woman comes in and says, "Sorry I'm late. You must be Dr. Burke." They shake hands. "I'm Harper Stanhope. Please sit. Today is just a meet and greet so that we can get to know each other."
"Please don't take this the wrong way," Juliet says, "but I really don't think I need therapy."
"How 'bout we call it talking instead of therapy?"
"Okay," Juliet says.
"Good. Now, let's talk. So you've been here a week and what's your least favorite part so far?"
"I don't like being treated like a celebrity."
"And is that surprising?" Harper asks. "You're big news right now."
"Yes, I know," Juliet says. "I guess I don't like being the center of attention. It makes me feel isolated, alone."
"Well maybe you feel that all eyes are on you, but you're not a celebrity and soon enough you'll realize that you're no different than anyone here."
"Oh, I know," Juliet says. "I never meant that I-" There is a knock at the door.
"Yes?" Harper says toward the door.
Tom opens the door and says, "Harper, I'm sorry for the interruption, I know you don't like me busting in, but Ben would like to see the doc."
Harper forces a smile and says, "She's all yours, Tom." They stand and Harper tells Juliet that it was nice talking with her and welcomes her to the island.
As Juliet walks with Tom he says, "That Harper is a piece of work, but you give her a week and she'll have you crying about your daddy. I'm speaking from personal experience, here." He laughs.
Ben stands on a porch with a bouquet of flowers. "Welcome to your humble abode."
"This is for me?" Juliet says. "The whole house?"
"You're here to help us with some very important research, Juliet. We pulled out all the stops. Two bedrooms, two baths, washer and dryer, fresh linens, a well stocked fridge. Oh, and I know you love the opera. You have all the classics on CD."
"Ben, this is amazing. Seriously, you shouldn't have gone to all the trouble. I'm only going to be here for six months."
"Right, of course, but we want you to feel at home."
Searching for Daniel and Charlotte
Juliet struggles to put a pole up for her shelter. "Need some help?" Sun asks and runs over.
"I'm fine," Juliet says. "I just can't seem to get it steady."
Sun helps with the pole and Juliet thanks her.
"Why are you going to all this trouble," Sun says, "when we're about to leave this island?"
"Well, I still need somewhere to sleep tonight, right?"
Jack comes over and asks if Juliet has seen Charlotte and Faraday because all of their stuff is gone.
Juliet says she hasn't seen them. "You still have the sat phone, right?"
Jin says something in Korean and Sun says, "He saw them going into the jungle."
"Why didn't he say anything?" Jack asks.
Sun asks Jin and in English he says to Jack, "You said they are friends."
"Aren't they?" Sun asks
They prepare to go after them and Jack says, "We've got a lot of trail to cover. We'll fan out. If you pick up the trail, call out to me and I'll come to you."
It begins to rain and they go into the jungle.
Juliet hears the whispers and stops and looks around. She calls out for Jack, then turns to see Harper standing in front of her. "Hello, Juliet, long time no see."
"What are you doing here?"
"I came to deliver a message from Ben. The two people you are looking for, Faraday and Lewis, they're heading to the Tempest. And if they figure out how to deploy that gas, then everyone on this island is going to die."
"Why don't you stop them?"
"Because Ben wants you to."
"How can Ben possibly know where they are when he's a prisoner?"
"Ben is exactly where he wants to be."
"How am I supposed to stop them?"
"By pointing the gun and pulling the trigger."
Jack runs over and points his gun at Harper and says, "Who are you?"
Harper turns around and says, "I'm an old friend of Juliet's. I just told her where the people you're looking for are headed. Maybe you and your gun could go too."
They hear the whispers and turn, looking for them. When they turn back, Harper is gone.
Goodwin
Juliet sits on the floor of her lab and cries. She hears a noise and goes to investigate. She sees a man and says, "You okay?"Goodwin turns around and says he was just looking for some gauze. "I didn't know anyone was here."
She sees his arm and says, "How'd you manage that?" He's got a nasty burn on his arm.
"I work over at the power station and pressed up against a transformer."
"Take a seat," she says, "let me take a look at it."
"You're Burke, right? The baby doctor."
"What gave me away?" She gathers supplies.
"I heard we lost Henrietta this morning."
Juliet fights to hold back tears.
"It's okay, it's not your fault."
"Pregnant women are dying on this island. I was brought here to help fix that. So whose fault is it?" She works on his arm.
"Believe me, no one expects you to fix it overnight. Do you have anyone to talk to? Do you have friends here? Maybe Harper."
"Harper hates me. We only talk because we have to. I get the feeling that she's a mean and spiteful person."
"She's my wife," Goodwin says.
Juliet apologizes and he says not to worry about it.
"Hey," Goodwin says, "I know this place can wear on you. If you need to talk, I'm around."
"Good to know," she says. "Oh, um, if you promise not to tell your wife what I said about her, I won't tell anyone that you lied about what happened to your arm. I know a chemical burn when I see one."
"You've got a deal. Oh, by the way, I'm Goodwin."
The Tempest
Juliet and Jack walk quickly through the jungle. Juliet says, "Faraday and Lewis are heading to the Tempest."
"The Tempest?" Jack says.
"It's safer for you if I don't talk about it."
"No, talk about it, please."
"It's an electrical station that powers the island."
"Why would they go there?" Jack stops her. "Hey, if there's something you need to tell me, now's the time to do it."
"What I need is for you to help me. Will you help me? If we move all night, maybe we can still catch them."
Jack looks around and then nods.
