Static. Then we see the ocean floor through a remotely operated vehicle, ROV 1, and hear sonar and two guys talking.
"Sorry, Ron, drone's got nothing but sea to 5000 meters below. You picking up anything with yours?"
"Zip. Trying to get her a peek over this ridge as soon as I can. The sonar is pinging up something now. Hey, you want to switch feeds?"
"Roger that." We switch to ROV 2.
"I'm headed on a bearing of about 1-3-7 from the coordinates we pulled off our guys map, but don't hold your breath."
"Magnetometer is picking up a hell of a lot of anomalies down here."
"Let's go to the next grid and recalibrate."
The ROV comes upon an Oceanic airplane. "Are you getting this?"
"What? What's up?"
"It's, it's an airplane. Oh my God! It's Oceanic 815."
The News
As we see the plane under water, a reporter on the news says, "This haunting footage comes to us from the Christiane I, a salvage vessel in the Indian Ocean. For more than two months it's been scouring the depths of the Sundra Trench off Bali in search of the remains of sunken trading ships. Late last night the Christiane deployed two remotely operated vehicles, or ROVs, that verified what the National Transportation Safety Board has long feared."The news is on a TV in Essex, Massachusetts. A woman walks by the TV set and goes into the kitchen. "How do you want your eggs, Dan?"
A man sits in front of the TV sobbing.
From the kitchen the woman says, "So what happened? They found that missing plane? Dan?" She walks over to him. "Dan, why are you so upset?"
"I don't know," he says.
Chopper Going Down
Dan is on a helicopter that is in trouble. He looks terrified. A woman yells, "I can't find my vest!"A man says, "Check under your seat."
"I already did!"
"Get ready!" the pilot yells.
"Here, just take mine," the man says and gives her his vest.
"Everybody out, now!" the pilot says.
The man opens the door, grabs Dan, and says, "Hey, genius, go!" He pushes Dan out the door, keeping hold of his vest. Dan tries to hold on, but can't. Dan parachutes to the ground, then quickly stands up and looks around, looking terrified. He hears something and gets his gun ready. Jack and Kate come running over. "Hey there. Are you Jack?" he asks.
"Yeah, I'm Jack," Jack says. "Who are you?"
"I'm Daniel Faraday. I'm here to rescue you."
As they walk through the jungle, Jack says, "Hey Dan, the chopper, how many of you were on it?"
"Uh, four, including me."
Kate says, "So what happened to the rest of them?"
"Yeah, yeah," Daniel says, "I, uh, I have no idea. I don't know how many of them were able to get out before it went down. I just, uh, jumped. And I lost my uh, what do you call it, my pack. My phone was in my pack. If I had a phone I'd just, uh-"
"We have a phone," Kate says.
Jack pulls out the phone, hands it to Kate and she hands it to Dan. Dan pushes a button and on speaker we hear Minkowski answer. "Hey, George, it's Daniel."
"Dan, the chopper com went dead. What the hell happened up there?"
"Yeah, I don't know, George, there was an electrical storm. All the instruments, I think they just went down. Listen, I made contact with some of the survivors and we just, uh-"
"Dan, am I on speaker?"
Dan says to Kate and Jack, "Would you give me just one second?" He walks off and talks on the phone.
"Don't worry, Naomi covered for us," Kate says. "They don't know what Locke did to her."
"You sure about that?" Jack says, and indicates the gun in Dan's waistband.
Dan walks back over and says, "Okay, okay, so the boat hasn't heard from anybody else yet, but, uh, the GPS transponders," he taps the blinking light attached to his vest, "the team and I are all wearing these. The transponders will send the locations back to the ship and then the ship will send our locations back into the phone." The phone beeps and a red dot comes on it. "There's my signal right there. Will you help me find them?"
Jack nods. "Absolutely."
"Okay."
They start walking again, Jack leading, then Kate, then Daniel. Daniel says, "Hey, where are the rest of your people?"
"Most of them are back at the beach," Kate says.
"Most of them?" Daniel says.
Locke and the Weather
Locke stands in the middle of tall grass enjoying the rain. Hurley walks over and says, "Dude, what's wrong with you? You're going to get struck by lightning."The rest of Locke's group stand under a big tree.
"The storm's about to pass, Hugo," Locke says.
"It's a freakin' monsoon," Hurley says, "We got to-" The rain stops.
Vincent shakes off the water. "Let's go," Locke says, and the group follows him.
"Why you going East?" Sawyer asks. "I thought you said the Barracks were due South."
"Because, James," Locke says, "we have to make a little detour first."
"Detour to what?"
"There's a cabin I have to go to."
"I thought the cabin was back that way," Hurley says, pointing.
Locke stops. "What'd you say, Hugo?"
"Uh, I thought you were talking about the airplane cabin," Hurley says, not very convincingly.
"Why are we wasting our time going to a shack, anyway?" Sawyer says.
"Because we're supposed to," Locke says.
"Right. Like you were supposed to throw a knife into that Naomi chick's back."
"Uh huh," Locke says and continues walking.
"You mind telling us who you're getting your orders from, Colonel Kurtz?"
"I got them from Walt."
