Sayid thinks it's a mistake to follow Locke's compass bearings that Locke got off of Eko's stick. Sayid breaks away from Locke, Kate, and Rousseau to gather fruit. He hears a bell and sees a cow. He follows the cow to a small farm.

He sees the man with the eye patch. He shows Kate, Locke, and Rousseau and gives his gun to Kate. He goes in alone to talk to the man. The man shoots him in the arm, acting as if Sayid is one of the Others. Sayid tells him they were in a plane crash and the man takes him, Kate, and Locke into his house.

The man says his name is Mikhail Bakunin and that he is the last survivor of the Dharma Initiative. Sayid doesn't believe him and takes him prisoner. He and Kate go below and find The Flame Station.

Sayid devises a plan to swim into the station and turn off the signal, but he wouldn't be able to swim back out. Jack doesn't want him to go on a suicide mission.
