In flashbacks, Desmond gets released from prison. He goes outside and a man tells him to get in the car. He gives Desmond back all the unopened letters Desmond had written to Penelope Widmore.
Desmond goes to a coffee shop in America, but has no money. Libby pays for his coffee and they begin to talk. He talks about racing around the world on a boat, trying to win a contest sponsored by Charles Widmore.
Libby says that her husband just recently passed away and gives Desmond his boat.
Desmond goes to a stadium and a woman finds him there. He is surprised to see her. He says he will be back in a year, but she wants him to stay. Penelope tells him that she'll wait for him.
