In flashbacks, Jack tries to save a man with a tumor in his spine. His father, Dr. Christian Shepard, advises against it, but Jack proceeds, getting closer than he should to the man's daughter, Gabriela. Jack spends way too many hours at the hospital and after the man dies during surgery, Jack ends up kissing Gabriela.
Jack goes home and tells his wife, Sarah, but she had already been planning on leaving him. She was seeing someone else.
Michael locks Jack and Locke in the armory and takes off to find Walt. Sawyer later lets them out of the armory and the three of them take off after Michael. Jack tells Kate that she can't go. When looking for Michael, they run into Mr. Friendly who tells them to stay on their part of the island. Jack refuses to leave without Michael, and Mr. Friendly brings out Kate and holds a gun to her neck. The men drop their weapons and head home empty handed.
