Katie and Tom Listen to the Tape

A blond Kate drives up to a motel, changes her license plate, then sneaks into a motel room and takes a shower, washing out the blond. She goes to the lobby and gets a letter, which makes her cry. She goes to the hospital, but a guard is in front of the door of the room she wants, so she continues past. Then she finds a man named Tom and asks that he help her see Diane, who has cancer.

At Tom's house, he schedules Diane for an MRI at 5 a.m. so that Kate can see her. Then the two go out and dig up a time capsule from when they were kids. The toy airplane is Tom's and he gets it from the capsule. They listen to a cassette tape of them as kids where they talk about being together forever.

At the hospital, Kate calls Diane "Mom", and when Diane recognizes her daughter she screams for help. A guard comes and Kate tries to escape in Tom's car. Tom gets in the car with her and she can't get him to get out. She guns the engine to run through a barricade and the officer fires several shots, but they are able to get away. Suddenly they hit another car, and Kate looks at Tom to see that he's dead, shot in the chest. She glances in back and sees the capsule items, but doesn't have time to grab them. She jumps out of the car and runs away.
