What is the Casimir Effect?

By Bonnie Covel, About.com

Question: What is the Casimir Effect?
The term "Casimir Effect" was first introduced in Episode 4x13, There's No Place Like Home Part 2.
Answer: While the term was first heard on the show in the season 4 finale, many Lost fans heard the term before the start of season 4 with the release of the Orchid Video at San Diego Comic-Con.

The Casimir effect results from physical forces, such as two uncharged metallic plates in a vacuum placed very close together. In theory, this would cause space-time to "curl up".
