The Man Behind the Curtain Flashback Information
Flashback Character: BenFlashback Highlights: Ben's mom and dad, Emily and Roger, are out on a hike when Emily is 7 months pregnant. She goes into labor and Roger delivers Ben.
Roger picks up Emily and the baby and carries them to a road just outside of Portland. A man and woman drive up and try to help them, but Emily dies.
A few years later, the man who had tried to help them, Horace, gets Roger a job working on the island as a work man with the Dharma Initiative. During registration, Ben meets Annie, a girl about his age.
Later, while Roger argues with Horace about being shot at and wanting more pay, Ben hears tapping on his window and sees his mother, but she disappears.
Ben goes to school with Annie and on his birthday she gives him wooden dolls that are of him and her. She keeps the Ben doll and tells him that now they will never be apart.
That night, Ben goes home to find his father drunk on Dharma beer. His father sees the package Annie had given Ben and realizes that he forgot Ben's birthday. He says he doesn't want to celebrate the day Ben killed his mother.
Ben runs out into the jungle and comes to the pylons. He sees his mother on the other side and starts to run to her, but she tells him to stop, that it's not time yet.
Later, Ben gets the code to turn off the fence and goes outside it. He meets a hostile, Richard Alpert, who tells him that Ben can come with him, but he has to be patient.
As a young man, Ben asks his father if he really blames Ben for his mother's death. Roger says he doesn't know and Ben puts on a gas mask and gasses his father to death. He returns to the barracks, still wearing the gas mask, and sees that the Dharma Initiative workers have been gassed.
Richard walks up and removes his gas mask. Ben does the same. Richard asks if Ben wants them to get his father's body and Ben says no.
The Man Behind the Curtain Island Highlights
Sawyer plays the Juliet tape recording for a group and Jack and Juliet walk up. Jack asks how he got that and Juliet says that after seeing Sun's baby on the ultrasound she told Jack what they were making her do.Sawyer plays the other side of the tape, which is Ben saying they don't have time to get samples and to just mark the tents of the pregnant women.
At the Others' tent camp, Locke wants to know who Ben answers to. Ben says Jacob and Locke wants Ben to take him to see Jacob. Ben says he can't do that.
Mikhail comes running into camp and wonders what Locke is doing there. He says that Locke's people found a woman who parachuted onto the island. They have to go to their camp.
Locke says they can't because Ben is taking him to see Jacob. Everyone stops and stares and Ben looks nervous.
Ben tells Locke it will have to wait and Mikhail wants to know why Ben is explaining himself to Locke.
Locke attacks Mikhail, and despite Ben's pleas, no one comes to Mikhail's rescue.
While Ben and Locke fill their canteens at a stream, Alex comes and gives Locke a gun. She says that if they are going to see Jacob, Locke will need a gun. She sarcastically wishes her father a happy birthday.
Locke and Ben go into some old ruins and Ben talks to an empty chair as if Jacob is there. Locke tells Ben that he doesn't know anything and he is pathetic. He opens the door, but hears a strange voice say, "Help me."
He asks Ben what he said and turns around and shines the flashlight on Ben.
Suddenly the door closes, the room shakes, the lantern falls on the ground and starts a fire, and windows break. Ben grabs the chair and tells Jacob that he's had his fun.
For a moment, it looks like someone is sitting in the chair. Locke goes outside and shuts the door.
Ben asks what Jacob said to him, and Locke says it was Ben who had said it.
Ben takes Locke to a mass grave and tells him that that's his people. That's the Dharma Initiative. He shoots Locke and Locke falls into the grave.
"What did Jacob tell you?" Ben asks.
Locke says that Jacob said, 'Help me.'
