Kate Chooses Sawyer
"I saw Jack," Kate says. "They brought me in to see him. They want him to do surgery on Ben.""Who the hell is Ben?"
"Henry, the guy who brought us in. They say if Jack does the surgery they're going to let us all go."
"And you and me are what, bait?"
"Something like that," Kate says.
"At least the doc ain't dumb enough to do it."
"I told him he had to."
"Why would you do that?" Sawyer stands, obviously upset.
"I did it to save your life."
"My life don't need saving!"
"You want to die? 'Cause that's what going to happen. Pickett is just waiting for his chance." She starts to climb out of her cage. "I've seen the way he looks at you."
"Damn it, Freckles, stay put."
She continues to climb. "And you know what he's going to do, so don't pretend that you don't care."
"Get down, Freckles, we've already been through this."
From the top of the cage she says, "Shut up, James. You don't want Jack to save your life, then you're going to save your own. We're getting out of here now." She hits his lock with a rock.
"Stop it! Damn it, Kate!"
She gets the lock open and goes inside. "Go! Get out of here, run!"
"You're out of your cage. Why don't you run, Kate?" Sawyer says, "Because me, I ain't running. Because there ain't no place to go. We ain't on our island. We're on another island, like Alcatraz, a couple of miles off shore. So unless you're a mermaid, or you got a boat, there ain't no point."
She pushes him. "When were you planning on telling me this?"
"Never."
"Why not! Why wouldn't you?"
"'Cause I wanted you to believe that we had a damn chance."
Kate kisses Sawyer.
"What was that for?" he asks and she says she doesn't know.
He kisses her. The two make love.
Kate's Flashback - Honeymoon
Kate, wearing an apron, puts a plate of french toast in front of Kevin. It has a happy face on it and he smiles and says, "Very nice."She laughs. He says, "Okay, now it's your turn. Look under your placemat."
"What did you do?" She pulls two Oceanic tickets out and asks what they are.
"You know that honeymoon I've been promising you for six months? You are holding in your hand, two tickets to Costa Rica. So get your passport ready, baby."
Kate looks anxious.
"Hey, what's wrong?" he asks.
"Nothing," she says. "I just love you so much."
Kate stands in the door as he gets into his police car. She smiles and waves while he drives off, then her smile fades.
Afterglow
Kate lays with Sawyer, covered only by a shirt. "Can I ask you something, Freckles?" Sawyer says. "The day Blockhead was beating on me, and you said, I love you, that was just to get him to stop."He waits and she kisses him. "I love you, too," he says.
Try the Door
Jack is startled awake by the intercom static. He goes to it and asks who it is."Try, the door," comes the voice.
Jack tries the door and it opens. He steps out and looks around. He goes down the hallway and into the room with the TV screens. He opens a closet to find guns. After looking around, he takes a hand gun and loads it.
As he's walking back by the TV screens, he sees Kate and Sawyer, lying together naked in a cage.
Ben walks up behind him and says, "If it helps, I was surprised too." Jack points the gun at Ben and Ben says, "If I was a betting man, I would have picked you and her."
"Shut up," Jack says.
"Well," Ben says, "I suppose this would be the proverbial nail in my coffin, wouldn't it."
"Tomorrow. Tomorrow morning, first thing. And everything I mentioned before, the instruments, the anesthesia, and someone that can hold a damn clamp."
"Of course," Ben says.
"I'll get it out, your tumor, and I'll keep you alive. But I need your word. I need what you promised me before. I need to get the hell off this island."
"Done."
