The Recorder
Sawyer hides in the bushes, watching the beach camp. Sayid walks by and Sawyer calls to him."What happened to you?" Sayid asks.
"I was with Locke."
"Where is he?"
"He went back."
"Back where?"
"With them. Don't ask me where it is because it doesn't matter right now. What does matter, is this." He shows Sayid the tape recording.
Mikhail
Mikhail runs through the forest. He comes to the tent camp and yells, "Where's Ben? Where is he?"Ben comes out of his tent and says, "I thought you were dead."
"I'm fortunate the pylons where not set to a lethal level," Mikhail says.
Locke walks out of the tent.
"What is he doing here?" Mikhail asks.
"It's all right," Ben says.
"He's the one who tried to kill me."
"He's with us now," Ben says. "Where have you been, Mikhail?"
"I encountered several of his people in the jungle. They had an injured woman with them. Apparently she had just parachuted onto the island."
"What?" Ben says.
"Her helo crashed in the water. She says her ship is approximately 130 clips to the west of us. She has a radio telephone."
"Where is she now?"
"I assume they have taken her back to their camp."
"We'll be visiting their camp day after tomorrow. We'll take care of it then," Ben says.
"Day after tomorrow? We have to go now!"
"Ben's not going anywhere with you," Locke says and Ben looks nervous. "He and I are going to see Jacob."Everyone stops what they are doing and stares at Ben.
"Please tell me this is not true, Benjamin," Mikhail says.
"I'm sorry, I have to deal with this now, John. Our excursion will have to wait."
"Since when do you explain yourself to him?" Mikhail asks. "An outsider--"
Locke attacks Mikhail.
"Tom!" Ben says, but Tom just sits there. "Richard!" Richard does nothing either.
Locke leaves Mikhail bloodied and on the ground. "So, when do we leave?" Locke asks.
Happy Birthday, Dad
Ben and Locke fill their canteens at a stream."You know you didn't have to beat Mikhail senseless to make your point, John," Ben says.
"Yes I did," Locke says.
"Locke." Alex comes over. "I hear you're going to go see Jacob. You're going to need this." She hands him a pistol.
Ben looks shocked. She starts to walk away and then turns and says, "Happy birthday, Dad."
Ben's Flashback - The Hostiles
Ben is in a classroom with several children. The teacher is talking about a volcanic reaction.Annie raises her hand and says, "Is that what happened to the volcano on this island?"
"Yes," the teacher says. It says Olivia on her uniform. "But that was a long time ago. Okay, let's get ourselves an eruption." She pours water into a model volcano.
There is a boom and shaking and the teacher looks worried. An alarm comes over the speakers and Olivia tells Annie to lock the back door and for the students to get in position. Olivia gets a shotgun.
The students all huddle in one area and Annie locks the door. Ben stays in his seat until Annie comes over and gets him. "Don't worry," she says, "it's just the hostiles. We'll be okay."
Ben sees people running around outside.
Later, Ben is laying in his bed, petting a white rabbit. He hears Horace and his father talking in the other room.
"Hey, man," Horace says, "I heard you ran into some trouble."
"We're driving back from The Flame and we hear this huge explosion. The next thing I know there's a siren wailing and we're driving through the middle of a shoot out."
"Look, we're having some squirmishes with the natives."
Ben gets up and looks out the door.
"What do you mean natives?"
"Well, we're not exactly sure who they are."
Roger throws a beer can.
"Roger, I did you a favor, man. You were having trouble finding work. And don't forget about Ben. He's getting a quality education."
"I don't give a damn about his education! If I'm going to get shot at, I want hazard pay. I want another thirty grand.""Calm down, man."
"And don't try to tell me you don't have it. You hear me?"
Ben hears tapping on his window, but doesn't see anyone there.
"Get the hell out of my house!" Roger says.
Ben closes the door and turns to see his mother. He backs up and falls over a chair.
Roger comes in and says, "I thought I told you to go to bed."
Ben looks back to the window. No one is there. He picks up a picture of his mother and father.
