Three Days Ago
The Others are busy putting up tents and setting up camp in a large open meadow. Locke helps Cindy with a tent. He notices lots of people looking at him."Don't mind them," Cindy says, "they're all just excited that you're here."
"Excited?"
She nods. "Yeah. We've been waiting for you."
Tom walks over. "John, you got a minute?"
Locke stands. "Yeah."
"Ben's asking for you."
"Okay." He goes to Ben's tent.
Ben sits in his wheelchair, listening to a tape recording of Juliet. "Ben, it's 6 a.m. Kwon is pregnant. The fetus is healthy and was conceived on island and with her husband. He was sterile before they got here." He turns off the tape recording when Locke walks in.
"Hello, John," Ben says. "Thanks for coming."
"What's that?" Locke asks.
"Juliet is gathering information for us at your former camp. She's determining if any of the women are pregnant. Then we're going to go in and take them."Locke raises his eyebrows. "Take them?"
"This is not the first time we've done this, John, trust me, no one will get hurt. Could you pass me that please?" He points to a walking stick.
Locke hands him the stick and Ben uses it to get up and walk around. Locke looks surprised.
"I believe I have you to thank for this, John," Ben says. He puts the tape recorder in a drawer.
"Me?" Locke says.
"A week ago I couldn't move my toes, but the minute you showed up, I began to feel pins and needles. This is only the beginning, John, I can't wait to show you what this island can do. But unfortunately you're not ready, John."
"No, I'm ready."
"You're still the crippled man you used to be before coming to this island. You'll never be free until you release the hold that your father has over you. Why do you think you brought him here?""Oh, oh, oh, the magic box," Locke says. "Okay, Ben, how about you show me--"
"The magic box is a metaphor, John. I can't show you anything until you show me that you're ready and willing to be one of us. When people join us here on the island, they need to make a gesture of free will, of commitment. That's why you're going to have to kill your father."
Locke looks over at his father tied to a giant pole.
Present - Naomi
In the kitchen area, Charlie gathers supplies. Jack comes over. "Hey, when you'd get back?""Jack, hey, last night. Well, early this morning."
"So, camping, huh? What are you guys doing out there?"
"We figured we'd explore a bit, further down the beach. You know, male bonding."
"Well, next time you go, sign me up."
Charlie brings the stuff over to a tent where Desmond, Jin, and Hurley are standing. He hands the food to Jin and says, "Thanks, Jin." Jin goes inside the tent.
"We have to tell Jack," Charlie says.
"Yeah," Hurley says, "I mean shouldn't he check out her wound?"
"Can you give me your word that Jack can be trusted? That he spent 10 days with those people and that nothing happened to him? And that woman he's spending all his time with?" Desmond asks.
"Juliet," Charlie says.
"Aye, Juliet," Desmond says. "Two weeks ago she had your friends in cages. Naomi, you heard everything that she said. If we keep her safe, she's our way off this island. So given that, do you trust Jack or don't you? Right. So you better bring us someone we can trust."
Present - The File
Sawyer's bare feet are bloody as he follows Locke through the jungle."So what else is in it?" Sawyer asks. Locke asks in what and Sawyer says, "The file they got on me."
"Not much. That your parents died when you were very young. But it doesn't say why your father shot your mother, or why he turned the gun on himself. That must have been hard for you."
Sawyer looks upset. "What else?"
"High school transcripts. Criminal record, all the con jobs you were arrested for. I guess that's why you use an alias, huh? Why did you choose the name 'Sawyer'?"
Sawyer pulls the gun and hits Locke with it, throwing him to the ground. He gets on top of Locke and pulls Locke's knife, holding it to Locke's throat.
"How stupid do you think I am?" Sawyer asks. "I've already been conned by Ben once. Maybe you heard about it, bunny with a number painted on it. You think I'm just going to follow you through the jungle?"
"James, please, you have to trust me."
"Where are you taking me? Tell me the truth! What do you want from me?"
"I'm bringing you there to do exactly what I said. To kill Ben."
"Why'd you come back to get me?"
"I had to."
"Why me?"
"James, please!"
"Don't call me 'James'! Why won't you do it yourself?"
"I can't! I can't! I can't do it! That's why I came back for you."
"Get up. I'll go to where ever you got him, but then we're bringing him back to our camp. I ain't killing nobody."
"Yeah, yeah, I understand. But when you hear what he has to say, you'll change your mind." Locke gets up.
