Flashbacks in Italics
Desmond walks through the jungle in the rain, followed by Hurley, Charlie and Jin.
"You're insane, man," Charlie says to Hurley. "Superman can fly around the entire planet in the blink of an eye."
"Dude," Hurley says, "if we're going by a pure foot race, Sup would get dusted by The Flash."
"Well, why would The Man of Steel agree to a sodding foot race?" Charlie laughs and looks at Jin.
"Uh, for charity," Hurley says. "And Flash would totally win 'cause he could like vibrate through walls and stuff."
"Ooh, vibrations," Charlie says sarcastically. "What would Superman do if he came up against a wall?"
"Well, no smashing allowed."
"No flying, no smashing, any other restrictions I should know about? Perhaps we should fit Superman with a pair of Kryptonite--" Charlie looks down at his shoe. He's stepped on a wire. "What the hell?"
He lifts his foot and an arrow is released and punctures his throat.
Desmond apologizes and Charlie dies.
Desmond sees flashes of Hurley picking up a cable, then something blinking in the sky, then the picture of he and Penny. He sees Jin and Charlie holding a parachute, and someone's feet hanging. He hears Charlie talk about Superman. He sees Penny's face.
The flashes stop. Desmond is on the beach with a fishing pole. He looks around and sees Charlie taking a drink. He drops the pole and runs to Hurley.
"Hey, where's the wire?" he asks Hurley.
"Did you eat those mushrooms Jack warned us about?" Hurley asks.
"Listen to me. There's a wire, a cable buried in the sand. Do you know what I'm talking about? I saw a sequence of events," Desmond says, "things that are going to happen."
"This is juju crap, isn't it?"
"The cable, do you know where it is? This is important."
"Why?" Hurley asks.
Desmond sees the flashes again. "Because someone's coming."
Desmond's Flashback - Brother Desmond
Desmond's lips move as he reads the bible in a small room. He looks up, stands, and the door opens. A monk comes in with clothing for Desmond."God tests our faiths in many ways," the monk says.
Desmond changes into the clothes the monk brought.
The monk continues, "So, as you well know, we have our own test here. A vow of silence that lasts as long as we see fit. This challenges both his patience and his faith. For some, it may last a week. Those we're less sure about, a month. Personally, Desmond, I never thought you'd last. So now I stand corrected. For whatever reason, your path has led you here, and now you're one of us. Welcome, brother."
"Thank you, brother," Desmond says.
First Aid
Jack is on the beach. Desmond and Hurley approach and Desmond says, "Good morning, Jack. Must be nice to wake up in your own bed.""Yep, home sweet home."
"So I was wondering if I could borrow your first aid kit. I've twisted my ankle."
Jack gets up. "You want me to take a look at it?"
"Nah, it's alright. I've taped my share of ankles."
"Right," Jack says and gives him the first aid kit.
Hurley looks really uncomfortable and Jack says, "Something wrong, Hurley?"
"No, uh-uh, just keeping Desmond, here, company. 'Cause, we're friends."
Jack tells Desmond to bring the kit back when he's done and Desmond and Hurley walk away.
"What the hell was that?" Desmond asks. "Do you want him to get suspicious?"
"Suspicious of what?"
Desmond doesn't answer and Hurley says, "Oh, this is like when you knew that Claire was drowning, isn't it? That's why you got the first aid kit. Someone's going to get hurt. Is it me?"
"No," Desmond says, "it's just a precaution."
Hurley stops. "Look, Dude, you want me to take you to the wire? I want an explanation."
"I saw a sequence of events. Things that are going to happen."
"What did you see?" Hurley asks.
"It was like I saw a jigsaw puzzle. Only I didn't have the picture on the box, so I don't how the pieces fit exactly, but one of the pieces, the first one," he sees a flash of Hurley pulling the cable out of the sand, "it was you pulling the cable out of the sand."
"So what are the other pieces?"
"If I tell you that, it will change the picture on the box."
"So what? Isn't that the point, preventing something bad?"
"Not this day."
"So you're not trying to stop something from happening, you actually want it to happen."
Desmond sees flashes of he and Penny getting their picture taken, and then him wiping away her tears, and her kissing him. "More than anything."
Afternoon Delight
Sawyer looks around, then walks up to Kate's shelter. Standing outside, he says, "Hey Freckles, you home?""Thought you weren't allowed to use nicknames," she says from inside.
"Well, you weren't around when I lost the bet so you're," he looks inside and she is just pulling up her pants, "exempt."
She grabs her shirt and puts it on. "So what's up."
"I wanted to ask you something."
"Yeah?"
He's watching her button up her shirt.
"I'm up here," she says, pointing to her face.
He looks her in the eye. "Uh, so did you tell him?"
"Did I tell who what?"
"Did you tell the doc about you and me?"
She sits and puts on socks. "No, but he knows. He saw us on one of those surveillance monitors."
"You said the camera was broken."
"Well, they had another camera," Kate says.
"Those perverts."
"Anyway, he knows."
"Well, now that that's out of the way, how about a little afternoon delight?"
She pushes past him out of the tent.
"What?" Sawyer says. "You need me to make you a mix tape?"
"Yeah, why don't you do that."
