Locke Eats

Locke pushes Ben down a hallway and Ben flips on a light. "Where do you get electricity?" Locke asks.

"We have two giant hamsters running in a large wheel at our secret underground lair," Ben says.

"That's funny," Locke says sarcastically.

"There's leftovers in the refrigerator. Help yourself."

Locke eats some meat and says he never really appreciated chicken until right then.

"I know you think you need to do this, John, but if you blow up my submarine, I have a big problem with my people."

"Is that supposed to be an incentive not to blow it up?"

"I was born on this island," Ben says, "not many of my people can say that. Most of my people were recruited and brought here. As much as they love this place, as much as they would do anything to defend it, they need to know they can leave if they want to. The sub maintains that illusion."

"So you're lying to them."

"No," Ben says. "They're here because they want to be here. Some of them are just not ready to make a full commitment yet. But you, John, you've already made that commitment, and now you have a choice."

Locke gets a drink of water and Ben continues. "Because if you stop and if you think, I can show you things. Things you want to see very badly. Let me put it some way that you will understand. Picture a box. You know something about boxes, don't you, John? What if I told you that somewhere on this island there's a very large box and whatever you imagined, whatever you wanted to be in it, when you opened that box, there it would be? What would you say to that, John?"

"I'd say I hope that box is big enough to imagine yourself up a new submarine."

"Why are you so angry, John?"

"Because you're cheating! You and your people! You communicate with the outside world whenever you please. You use electricity and running water. You have guns. You're a hypocrite! You don't deserve to be on this island. If you had any idea what this place really was, you wouldn't be putting chicken in your refrigerator."

"You've been here 80 days, John, I've been here my entire life. So how is it that you think you know this island better than I do?"

"Because, you're in the wheelchair and I'm not."

Ben Manipulating

Alex returns with the pack. Ben asks if there were any problems and Alex shakes her head.

"This is how it's going to work," Locke says. "She's going to take me to the sub and once we're there I'll let her go."

"John, she's done enough," Ben says. "Let me take you."

"I don't want you to slow me down. Come on," he says to Alex, "let's go."

"John, before you go," Ben says, "you should know something. Jack and I made a deal. In less than an hour he's leaving this island on that submarine and it's a one way ticket. The anomaly wiped out our communications. We have no way of contacting the outside world. Which means, when that sub leaves, it can never come back. Which means that whether you blow up the submarine or let it leave, the end result is the same. No one will find this island."

Locke and Alex leave. Outside Alex says, "You know he's manipulating you, right?"

"How's that?" Locke asks.

"That's what my father does, he manipulates people. He makes you think it's your idea, but it's his."

"I'll have to keep that in mind," Locke says.

They come to a dock and Alex says, "The submarine is down there, at the end of the dock."

Locke tells her that he is sorry he had to involve her in this and walks to the dock.

Rousseau watches Alex from the cover of brush.

Locke walks down the dock and into the sub. He looks around the sub.

Back at his house, Ben puts the chicken away. Jack and Juliet walk in. Jack says, "Look, I know you don't owe me anything, but I need to ask you for one last favor."

"You don't knock?" Ben says.

"I need you to let my friends go after I'm gone."

"And if I say no, would that stop you from leaving?" Ben asks.

"Of course it would," Jack says.

"Your friends are only here to rescue you. But you seem to be doing a good job of rescuing yourselves. I suppose there's no reason to keep them here."

"Do I have your word on that?"

Ben says he'll let them go just as soon as Jack has left the island. They shake hands. He looks at Juliet. "Well, I guess this is it."

"Thank you, Ben, for keeping your promise," Juliet says. She and Jack walk out.

Locke walks back up the dock, soaking wet. Jack, Juliet, and some men come upon him. The men pull guns on Locke and tell him to get down. Ryan pats Locke down as Tom looks on.

Jack comes forward. "What are you doing here, John?"

"I'm sorry, Jack."

"Sorry for what?"

Behind Locke the submarine blows up. Jack and Locke look at each other.
