Claire's Flashback - Aunt Lindsey
Claire, dressed completely in black, walks into her mother's hospital room. Her mother's face is badly bruised and she has a tube in her mouth."Where were you?" a woman says.
Claire looks at the woman standing off to the side. "I went home to take a shower."
"That must have been nice," she says sarcastically.
"They said she was still in surgery," Claire says. "I had glass in my hair, Aunt Lindsey."
In anger, Lindsey says, "Well I'm glad that you're feeling refreshed."
Claire looks down. A doctor walks in. "Good afternoon. Are you the daughter?" Claire nods and he says, "I'm Dr. Woodruff from neurosurgery. I'll be observing your mother for the next few days."
"How is she?" Lindsey asks.
"We've managed to stabilize her immediate injuries, but," he looks at Claire, "your mother suffered a severe head trama. We'll have to wait for the swelling in her brain to go down before we can determine the full extent of her injuries. But I'm afraid we're looking at fairly widespread damage."
"What does that mean?" Claire asks.
"It means that at least right now, these machines are sustaining her life."
"But they won't always be," Claire says. "I mean when she wakes she won't be-"
"I can't say with any confidence," the doctor says, "that she will wake up."
Claire goes and sits by her mother. "Can she hear us?"
"I like to think she can," the doctor says.
"How long will she be like this?" Lindsey asks.
"Could be a day, a week, or years. We'll just have to wait and see. But I can assure you that she'll be very well taken care of."
"That's very nice," Lindsey says, "but we can't pay for that."
"Don't worry," Dr. Woodruff says, "your expenses have already been taken care of."
Lindsey and Claire look at each other and then Lindsey asks the doctor, "By who?"
"I've been asked to keep that confidential," he says.
The trap
A bird flies into Claire, Jin, and Sun's trap. They are about to pull the rope to make the net fall on the bird, when there are gunshots and all the birds fly away."Oh no!" Claire says.
Desmond comes out of the jungle with a gun and Jin says something in Korean.
"Look, I'm sorry," Desmond says over and over.
"What the hell is wrong with you?" Claire yells.
"I was shooting at a boar. I had no idea you were out here."
"Where's Charlie," Claire asks. "Is he with you?"
"He's back at the camp. Look, I'm really sorry," Desmond says.
"So it's just you?" Claire says in anger.
"Aye, it's just me."
"Hunting! In the exact same spot as we're setting our trap!"
"I was following a boar, Claire."
"Oh," Claire says sarcastically, "so it's just a coincidence, then." She looks behind him. "Where is it?"
"It got away," Desmond says.
"You don't want me to catch the birds, do you? You and Charlie. What's going on?"
"Why wouldn't I want you to catch the birds?"
Claire walks off.
The Electric Fence
Rousseau, Locke, Mikhail, Kate, and Sayid stand in front of one of the large pylons."What is it?" Kate asks as she starts toward it.
Sayid grabs her. "Don't touch it! Don't even go near it!"
Sayid goes to Mikhail. "What are these pylons?"
"What do you think they are?" Mikhail asks.
"A security perimeter. Those sensors on the side would be triggered if anyone passed between them. It's an alarm system, or a trap. Either way we'd be safer going around it."
"You're right," Mikhail says. "It was a security perimeter, but like everything else on this island, it hasn't functioned in years."
"Of course it hasn't," Sayid says, obviously not believe Mikhail.
"If you wish to waste your time, be my guest. The pylons encircle the entire Barracks, there is no going around them. If you don't believe me, look at your map."
Sayid pulls out the map and he and Kate look at it.
"He appears to be telling the truth," Sayid says.
Locke takes his pack off and drops it onto the ground. He grabs Mikhail and throws him into the area between two pylons. Mikhail appears to be stuck there and says, "Thank you." Then he begins to seize and his mouth foams. He falls inside the perimeter and dies.
"Oh my God!" Kate says.
"Sorry," Locke says.Without entering into the area, Sayid looks at Mikhail. "Looks like he suffered a cerebral hemorrhage."
"Why did you do that? We needed him!" Kate says.
"They were never going to trade him for Jack," Locke says.
"You don't know that!" Kate says.
"Well you don't know it either. What we do know is that he shot one of his own people who didn't want to be in this exact position."
"Yeah, well, we could have discussed it," she says.
"No one asked me about it when we brought him along in the first place," Locke says.
"Alright," Sayid says.
"Pardon me," Locke says, "for not knowing that they had a sonic fence! I didn't know he was going to die. How would I know that?"
Sayid looks at him. "Why are you really here? Are you here for Jack?" Sayid walks toward him.
"Why else would I be here?"
"We'll talk about this later."
"Fine by me. Just tell me how we're going to go through this."
Kate throws her pack down. "We're not going to go through it. We're going to go over it. Sayid, where's the axe?"
"It's in his pack," Sayid says, indicating Locke.
Kate goes for it and Locke says, "Wait a minute. I've got it."
Sayid swoops in and picks up the pack before Locke can get it. He pulls out some C-4. "I thought you didn't know there was any C-4."
"Well, I stand corrected," Locke says."Why did you take it?"
"You never know when a little C-4 might come in handy," Locke says.
"You'll have to do better than that," Sayid says.
Locke looks at Kate and she gives him a questioning look.
