Claire's Flashback - Reporting the Accident

Claire is getting stitches in her head. The doctor tells her to hold still. He finishes and looks at a policeman and says, "We're through now."

The officer walks into the room and introduces himself as Officer Barnes. He asks how the accident happened.

"A truck forced us off the road," she says.

"Who was driving?"

"Me."

"Has anyone contacted your father?"

"My father died when I was two."

"I'm sorry to hear that. I spoke with the truck driver. He's fine, by the way. He said that when you hit him-"

"No, he hit us."

"And what speed would you say that that happened?"

"He just came out of nowhere. I didn't--"

"That's not the question I asked, Ms. Littleton."

"I don't know how fast I was driving. Why are you even asking these questions?"

"These questions are standard procedure when there's a fatally."

"My mother is in surgery. She's not dead!"

He turns to walk out and she says, "This is not my fault!"

"I didn't say it was, Ms. Littleton."

Rousseau's Daughter

Kate and Rousseau go to a stream. Kate squats to get water and says, "Can I ask you something?"

Rousseau goes to the stream to fill up her canteen.

"I told you that your daughter was living with them and you haven't asked me a single question about her."

"Your friend, Jack, you care about him?"

"Yes."

"Imagine 16 years from now you thought he was still alive, but you knew in your heart that he wouldn't remember you, he wouldn't know you. He wouldn't even know that you ever cared about him." She stands. "I haven't asked you questions about my daughter, because I do not want to know the answers."

The List

Kate offers Mikhail water as they trek through the jungle.

"So how you'd get here?" Kate asks. "How'd you get on this island?"

"Don't waste your breath," Rousseau says. "Whatever he says will be a lie."

"I was recruited when I was 24," Mikhail says. "I was-"

"I didn't ask you when, I asked you how," Kate says.

"They brought me on the submarine."

Locke stops and turns around, facing Mikhail.

"So your people," Kate says, "they can just come and go whenever they want?"

"Oh yes. But two weeks ago our underwater beacon stopped emitting it's locator signal. There was an event, an electromagnetic pulse. It would be impossible to come back."

"Why would you want to come back?" Kate asks.

"You would not understand," he says.

"Try me."

"What I meant to say is, you are not capable of understanding."

"And why am I not capable?" she asks.

"Kate," Sayid says.

"Because you are not on the list," Mikhail says.

"What list?" she asks.

"The man who brought me here, who brought all of my people here, he's a magnificent man."

"If Ben's so magnificent, then why did he need one of us to save him?" Kate wants to know.

"Ben?" He shakes his head. "Ben is not... I will try to make this as simple as I can. You are not on the list because you are flawed. 'Cause you are angry and weak and frightened."

"The more I learn about you people," Sayid says, "the more I believe you're not as omniscient as you'd have us believe. Don't speak to us as if you know us."

"Of course I don't know you, Sayid Jarrah. How could I? And you, Kate Austen, are a complete stranger to me. But you, John Locke, you I might have a fleeting memory of you. But I must be confused because the John Locke I knew was--"
"Look at this," Rousseau says.

Locke doesn't take his eyes off of Mikhail.

"Over here," Rousseau says. "Come on."

They walk out into an open area. Large posts stand, with several yards between each one.

Sayid puts his pack down. Mikhail smirks. Locke says, "Well, looks like we're here."

Catching Birds

Jin makes a pile of rocks in a tide pool area and sticks a stick into it.

"Will this work?" Claire asks.

"Yes," Jin says.

Sun walks up the beach carrying two buckets. Jin says, "Sun...help."

Claire goes to help Sun with the fish. Sun says, "Let's get it over with," and pulls out a fish. "This was my mother's worst fear."

Claire wants to know what she means and Sun says, "That I would end up doing something very much like this. She had high hopes for me that did not include being married to a fisherman's son."

"Well I guess we don't always turn out like our mothers wanted."

"Oh course mine never worked a day in her life," Sun says.

Claire gets a faraway look. "My mom was a librarian."

"Was?"

"We should get this stuff out there," Claire says.
