Juliet's Flashback - Edmund Wants In
Juliet sits at a computer in the lab. Sherry walks up and says, "Juliet, Edmund wants to see you in his office."Juliet looks up and says, "Do you work here?"
"I'm the new research assistant."
"Of course you are," Juliet says.
In his office, Edmund says, "I want in."
"In on what?"
"I know what you're doing, Juliet."
"I'm not really sure what you--"
"I read your notes. I know what you took from the lab. The only thing I don't know is who's your guinea pig."
"Ed, I've been doing my research in my own lab on my own time. I don't really see why--"
"It's your sister, isn't it? Look, Jules, there's two ways this plays out. One is, your research is potentially genius, and the other raises some ethical questions, maybe even criminal concerns. But if you collaborate with me, based on my reputation, all this is viewed as cutting edge science and we will win prizes and drink champagne and do a lot of good for people. Why don't I give you some time to think about it?"
Ben Wants Juliet
Juliet paces outside. Tom comes out and says, "Ben's awake.""How?"
"Shephard says he's a spinal surgeon, not an anesthesiologist. Ben's asking for you."
Karl
Alex, Sawyer, and Kate come out of the hole. Sawyer says to Alex, "This a hobby of yours, Underdog, digging holes?"She says, "Yep, that and basket weaving. Want one?"
"Happen to have a tunnel to the mainland?" he says.
"No, but I've got a boat."
Sawyer wants to know the catch. She says her boyfriend is being held prisoner and if they help her get him, she'll help them get to the other island.
Sawyer asks if it's Karl, and she says yes.
Three Minutes
Jack tells Ben that he stopped the surgery and Ben says he knows, that he's been able to hear them for a few minutes. Juliet comes in and Ben wants to talk to her alone, but Jack says no."Please, I'm asking you," Ben says, "one gentleman to another. It won't hurt you to give me three minutes, will it? Knowing I have only 27 left."
"If you touch him," Jack says.
"I won't," she says.
Jack watches from the observation room, but he can't hear them. Tom comes in and tells Jack, "I'm Tom, by the way."
Ben talks and then Juliet cries.
"They've got history," Tom says.
Juliet comes out and says, "I would like for you to go back in there, put Ben under, and then finish the surgery."
"And why would I do that?"
"Because I'm going to go help your friends escape," Juliet says.Juliet looks at Tom and then walks out.
Juliet's Flashback - The Pitch
"Thank you for taking the time to let us make our pitch, Dr. Burke," Dr. Alpert says. He's showing her slides from Mittelos Bioscience and saying, "These pictures might look a little cheese ball, but our people really are this happy. We organize trips around the Portland area which is great for biking and hiking and river rafting."She says she's flattered, but doesn't know why they want her.
"Is it true that you successfully impregnated a male field mouse?"
She smiles and says, "He didn't carry to term."
"Mind if I ask you something?"
"Sure," she says.
He pulls up a slide and says, "What do you see?"
"It's a human womb. Judging from the decomposition of the endometrium I would say that the woman was somewhere in her 70s."
"Actually," he says, "she's 26."
"What happened to her?" Juliet wants to know.
"What if I told you that you could have complete freedom and money to figure it out? We think you're special, Dr. Burke, and we want you to lead a team of highly trained people because we think you're just that good."
"I can't."
He wants to know why and she says that her ex-husband wouldn't let her.
"He wouldn't want you to have this opportunity?"
"No, he doesn't want me to have anything, he wouldn't give the okay."
"We could reach out to him on your behalf," Dr. Alpert says, but she says not to bother.
She says the only thing that would work is if he were hit by a bus. She apologizes for wasting his time and says that she's a mess, she's not a leader.
