Finding Nadia

Episode 1x21, The Greater Good - Flashback 1
Sayid is led through Heathrow airport in handcuffs.

"Okay, Sayid," and agent says, "18 hours in a holding cell should be enough. Let's get to it, shall we? I'm Melissa Cole from Central Intelligence, this is Robbie Hewitt from ASIS. We're here because you're going to do us a favor."

C-4 explosives were stolen from an Army base and they want Sayid to help get them back. They know he is not a terrorist, they got him because he went to Cairo University and roomed with Essam Tazia, a member of the cell.

Sayid doesn't want to, but they say he will be saving lives. He wonders why he should care and the agent says, "Because we know where she is. Seven years since you left Iraq." She shows him a picture of Nadia. "Noor Abed-Jazeem. You want to know where she is? Then we're going to Sydney."

Fate

Episode 1x21, The Greater Good - Flashback 2
Sayid is in a Mosque, with other men, praying. He looks over at one man, then looks away. In the courtyard, the other man calls his name and runs to Sayid. Sayid acts surprised. "Essam!" They embrace.

Sayid says he's traveling and asks what Essam is doing in Sydney. Essam is a tree cutter. His wife had died, killed by a stray bomb. Essam invites Sayid to come over so they can catch up.

At Essam's apartment, he brings Sayid tea. Two other men are there playing a video game. Sayid asks if they all live together and Essam says that Sydney is expensive.

Sayid notices the smoke detector. The men are smoking and the detector has not gone off. He holds a cigarette to the smoke detector. He pulls a bugging device out and puts it in a glass of tea. One of the men wants to know who he is and Essam explains that he was Republican Guard.

"Perhaps it's not happenstance that you and Essam met at the Mosque. Perhaps it is fate," one of the men says.

Essam

Episode 1x21, The Greater Good - Flashback 3
Sayid and Essam play soccer. Sayid says that he thinks Haddad has a target in mind. Essam doesn't know, but he knows that there is going to be a martyr, him. Essam is upset and doesn't know if he can do it.

Later, with the two agents, Sayid says that he thinks he can get Essam to turn himself in. It's the other guys they want, Essam is in over his head. The agents ask if Essam knows were the C-4 is and Sayid says no.

They want Sayid to talk his friend into going through with the bombing so that they can find the C-4. Sayid refuses.

"Your girlfriend is an Iraqi living abroad with a record of insurgency," the agent says. "Wouldn't it be terrible if she got picked up as an enemy combatant, Sayid?"

Essam Afraid

Episode 1x21, The Greater Good - Flashback 4
Sayid and Essam walk down a street in Sydney. "I'm not sure I can do this," Essam says.

Essam is not afraid to die, but is worried about all the innocent people. Sayid says that innocent lives will be lost in service of the greater good."

Essam wonders if he is doing this because he's angry, and Sayid says so what if he is? Sayid lost someone too and there needs to be consequences.

Essam says, "Haddad was right, it was fate that brought us back together. Sayid, will you do this with me?"

"I will."

Essam Shoots

Episode 1x21, The Greater Good - Flashback 5
Sayid gets into a van with Haddad and Essam. The van pulls into a warehouse and Haddad opens the back of a truck filled with explosives.

Haddad says, "Stay relaxed and focused. Drive with the window down, the fresh air will keep you alert. You will need to wear these." He hands them uniforms and gives Essam a gun. "You are heroes. Good luck."

Essam prays, then starts the truck and drives. Sayid asks him to stop and tells him that he's working for the CIA. Essam is appalled that Sayid set him up, but Sayid wants him to leave before the CIA get there.

Sayid explains about Nadia and Essam says, "You used me to find a woman?" Essam puts the gun to Sayid's throat. Sayid begs Essam to let him live.

"I hope she makes you whole again." Essam turns the gun on himself and shoots.

Sayid Claims the Body

Episode 1x21, The Greater Good - Flashback 6
An ambulance arrives to take Essam's body away. The agents give Sayid the info to find Nadia. She's north of L.A. They give him an Oceanic plane ticket. He asks about the body and they say there is no one to claim him, so the body will be cremated.

Sayid says that Muslim tradition says that the body should be buried and can he claim him? They say no because he needs to be on a plane in two hours. He asks that they change the reservation to the next day, and they agree.

Sayid and Nadia

Episode 5x16, The Incident
Sayid and Nadia walk along a sidewalk. "Paris or Rome?" Sayid says.

Nadia laughs. "It doesn't matter."

"Yes, it does."

"As long as we're together--"

"It's our anniversary," Sayid says, "we have to find the perfect place."

"I would settle for finding my sunglasses," she says. They wait at the crosswalk to cross the street.

The walk sign comes up and they begin to cross the street as Nadia rummages in her bag. A man says, "Excuse me sir, can you help me?" He walks over with a piece of paper. "I'm sorry, I think I'm lost. Are you from Los Angeles?"

"What are you looking for?" Sayid asks.

Nadia, halfway across the street holds up her sunglasses. "I found them." She is hit by a car, which then takes off.

Sayid runs to her. "Nadia? Nadia?"

She blinks and says, "Take me home."
