Young Killer

Episode 5x10, He's Our You - Flashback 1
In Tikrit, Iraq, a man drags his young son out of a house and toward the family chicken coop. Gesturing, he angrily tells the boy that it's time for him to be a man, and that he must kill a chicken. The boy is very reluctant, and when his father tells him that he cannot come inside until he kills a chicken, the boy finds himself standing alone, unsure of what to do.

A smaller boy walks up and puts his hand on the first boy's shoulder. Then, calmly, he enters the chicken coop, picks up a chicken, and quickly wrings its neck. He hands the dead chicken to the first boy, and the father arrives just in time to see his son holding a chicken. He congratulates him, but the young boy cannot take any credit. The father sees what's happening and congratulates the second boy instead. "Well done, Sayid," the father says with a smile. Young Sayid smiles back.

Welcome to Hilah

Episode 2x14, One of Them - Flashback 1
With the sound of war outside, Sayid and other soldiers burn and shred documents. Sayid's commanding officer, Tariq, yells for them to shred the documents faster.

U.S. soldiers break the door in and give orders for the Republican Guard soldiers to get down. Sergeant Buccelli asks who's in charge. No one answers. He tells one of the Iraqi soldiers to stop what he's doing or he'll shoot, but the soldier doesn't stop. Sayid yells for him to stop and the Sergeant asks if he's in charge.

"No, I'm not," Sayid says in English.

"Who is?" the Sergeant asks.

Sayid says, "There is no commanding officer here. He left two hours ago for Hilah."

The Sergeant says, "Your English is good, but you're lying, and that ain't so good." He knocks Sayid out with the butt of his rifle.

Later, Sergeant Buccelli takes Sayid to Sergeant Austen. Austen asks if Sayid has ever done any translating and Sayid says not formally. Austen explains that a helicopter went down two days ago and the pilot was captured. It's very important that they get the pilot back. "We know that he was taken to the local Republican Guard intelligence commander, a man named Tariq. Do you know him?"

Sayid says that Tariq was his commanding officer and that he fled to Hilah. They walk through a door and Austen says, "Welcome to Hilah." Tariq is sitting inside.

Where's the Pilot?

Episode 2x14, One of Them - Flashback 2
Sergeant Austen tells Sayid to ask Tariq where the pilot is. Sayid does, but Tariq just says he doesn't know. Sayid keeps asking and keeps getting the same answer. Tariq tells Sayid to take the Sergeant's gun and kill himself and that Sayid is a disgrace. Sayid continues to tell the Sergeant that Tariq doesn't know where the pilot is.

Make Him Talk

Episode 2x14, One of Them - Flashback 3
Sayid, in handcuffs, is taken to see a man named Joe Inman. Joe says, "I want to talk to you about your buddy Tariq. You're a man who values loyalty, even doing a little translating for us you feel like you're doing the wrong thing. I get that and I respect it."

Joe plays a video tape and says that Tariq personally supervised the use of sarin gas on this village. Sayid recognizes the village. "No discrimination," Joe says, "the entire marketplace, innocent women and children."

Sayid asks that the tape be turned off and Joe says, "Loyalty is a virtue. But unquestioning loyalty, I don't think that's you."

Sayid says that Tariq will never talk and Joe says that's why Sayid must make him talk and slides a tool box to him.

Torture

Episode 2x14, One of Them - Flashback 4
Sayid enters the room where Tariq is, carrying the tool box Joe had given him. Tariq is surprised that they are letting Sayid speak to him alone. Sayid just asks where the pilot is.

Tariq says, "This is their new bluff? That you're going to torture me? They think you will do this? Sayid, you are a loyal soldier. The son of a great hero. Do not disgrace your father! You wouldn't dare harm me!"

Sayid takes out different tools and lays them on the table. Tariq says, "You will follow my orders as your commanding officer. Take that bag. Put it over your head and tape it up. Kill yourself, now! That's an order. Do it and die with what little honor you have left."

Sayid says, "You would have me take my own life? The information means nothing to you."

Tariq spits in Sayid's face. Sayid picks up some pliers.

Later, we see Joe pacing in his tent. Sayid goes in and says, "The pilot was executed two days ago. He's buried in a field four kilometers from here. I can take you there." When Sayid hands the box to Joe, we see that Sayid's hands are covered in blood.

Sayid's Skills

Episode 2x14, One of Them - Flashback 5
An Army convoy drives down a deserted dusty road in Iraq. Sayid's hands are tied behind his back and he sits across from Sergeant Austen, who is looking at a photograph. The sergeant asks if Sayid has a wife and kids and Sayid says no. Austen looks back down at the picture of young Kate.

The truck comes to a stop and they let Sayid out. Joe pulls out a knife and cuts the ropes from Sayid's hands. He says that one of these days Sayid will need to know something and now he has the skills to know how to get it.

"I will never do that again," Sayid says.

Joe doesn't seem to believe him. He gives Sayid some money, and they leave him there.
