John Locke’s Flashbacks Part 3

A Look at Locke's Pre-Crash Life

By Bonnie Covel, About.com

Helen

Episode 2x3, Orientation - Flashback Scene 1
Locke is in some kind of therapy meeting. A woman is complaining that her mother stole thirty bucks. Locke gets all mad and stands and says that his father stole a kidney.

After the meeting one of the other participants, who introduces herself as Helen, talks to Locke, realizing that he won't be coming back next week. They have a nice chat and she says she likes bald guys. He says he's not bald and she says she can wait.

What do You Want?

Episode 2x3, Orientation - Flashback Scene 2
Helen is asleep in bed and Locke is up, putting on his shoes. Helen wakes and asks what he's doing. Locke apologizes, but he has trouble sleeping in strange beds and it has nothing to do with her and he really likes her.

Later, Locke is sitting in a parked car, drinking coffee. He is surprised when his father opens the passenger door and gets in. "John," Anthony says, "I know you like to drive through my neighborhood and I know that every now and then you like to park outside my house. Now, I thought it might all stop when I moved, but here you are. Now, I admit, at first I thought it was funny, now it's just annoying. So how about you tell me what the hell it is you want."

Locke asks, "Why?"

Anthony says there is no why and that Locke is not the first person to ever get conned. He needed a father figure and Anthony needed a kidney. "Get over it," he tells John. "And don't come back. You're not wanted."

The Key

Episode 2x3, Orientation - Flashback Scene 3
Locke is in a restaurant with Helen. She puts a small gift box on his plate because it is their six month anniversary. Locke says he didn't get her anything, but she doesn't mind, it only cost a buck.

Locke opens the box and finds a key. Helen says it's to her place in case he's tired of knocking, but the condition is that when he goes home with her, he has to stay over. She'd followed him the previous night to the house that he goes to. "Is it your father's house?" she asks.

"Why would you follow me, Helen? Why would you do that?" he asks.

"Well you sneak off in the middle of the night. I just needed to know where you were going? I care about you, John."

She says that she wasted 20 years of her life being angry and she wanted to get over it, but couldn't do it alone. Locke helped her and now she wants to help him. "You just have to promise me that you're not going to go to that place anymore," she says and he promises.

Scared Locke

Episode 2x3, Orientation - Flashback Scene 4
Helen is asleep in bed next to Locke. He's awake and staring at the ceiling. He gets up and splashes water on his face. He looks at his scar in the mirror. He goes to his father's house. He watches the house, sipping coffee. A car comes up behind and bumps him. Helen gets out and hurries to his window. She grabs his keys and throws them over the fence.

She yells at him, saying he's scared of moving forward and that he has to choose between her and his father. He says he can't and she says, "Because you don't know what's going to happen. None of us do. That's why it's called a leap of faith, John. You don't have to be alone." She holds out her hand, and Locke takes it.

He's Dead

Episode 2x17, Lockdown - Flashback Scene 1
Locke retrieves an engagement ring from his sock drawer, looks it over then goes into the kitchen. Smiling, he packs a picnic lunch. Helen comes in and asks what she did to deserve this.

"Can't a fella take his girl out for a picnic lunch just 'cause?"

She walks behind him and he checks out the ring again. "So where you taking me?" she asks.

"I'm not telling, so just quit asking."

She grabs the newspaper and her coffee and asks if he needs help. He tells her to just read her obituaries and he'll take care of everything.

"Don't knock the obits," she says. "It's the nicest part of the paper. No one ever says anything mean about people once they're dead."

Locke says he thought the funnies were the nicest part of the paper. He continues packing the picnic basket and Helen says, "John, what's your father's name? Is it Anthony? Anthony Cooper?"

"That's right," Locke says. He stops and looks at her.

"He's dead."

Silver Car

Episode 2x17, Lockdown - Flashback Scene 1
Locke and Helen pull up to a cemetery. "You sure you want to do this?" Helen asks. Locke thinks a moment, then nods. "We can still go on that picnic, you know."

"Soon, I promise," Locke says.

"Hey," she says. "Maybe he left you his kidney." They both laugh.

Locke and Helen are the only two at the funeral while the Father reads from the bible. Locke notices two guys standing across the cemetery. One is watching him.

He also notices a silver car sitting in the driveway. The Father asks Locke if he'd like to say anything.

Locke stands up and says, "I forgive you," to the coffin. He watches the silver car drive off.
