Black Horse
Episode 2x9, What Kate Did - Flashback Scene 3Kate, wearing handcuffs, travels in the car with the Marshal on a rainy night. He says it's a long drive back to the arraignment and asks Kate why she picked now to kill Wayne.
He says, "Nice, corn fed farm girl like yourself, no history of violence, straight A's, no record, couple of speeding tickets, just got to wonder, why'd you kill him now? Oh, right, yeah, don't tell me. You wouldn't want to incriminate yourself, not after you were so smart planning it. That jury back in Iowa sure ain't going to get hung up on premeditation. And a gas leak, come on, it's amateur hour from top to bottom."
"Sounds like you have it all figured out," she says and he says he has her figured out.
He says, "White trash mom divorces Dad, starts up with some guy who's a drinker. He knocks her around a little bit, she marries him, because, you know, that's what happens. And then this drunk, this Wayne, he moves into your house, and you get to lay there every night and listen to him doing your mom right there in Daddy's old bedroom. And even that wouldn't be so bad if he didn't beat her up all the time. But she loves him. She defends him. If that don't make a person want to kill somebody I don't know what does. But the question is now, why now? Why after all these years did you just decide to blow poor Wayne up? He come knocking on your door late at night?"
"He never touched me," Kate says.
He reaches down to mess with the cigarette lighter and when he looks up there is a black horse in the road. He swerves and then hits a pole. Kate catches her breath, then looks at the Marshal, who is unconscious, his face planted in the air bag. She reaches in his pocket for the keys to the cuffs and he comes to. She punches him and throws him out the driver side door. He lays there in a heap. She gets into the driver's seat and starts the engine. She backs up the car. The horse is standing there looking at her, and she drives off.

"What's your real name?" Cassidy says. "The next time somebody asks you, don't think about it, not even for a second. So, why Lucy?"
"She's a saint. Memorized them all when I was in Sunday school, so I figure they're all rattling around in my brain."
"What makes a girl who went to Sunday school scared of cops?"
Kate takes a drink. "A few months ago, I killed my stepfather and then escaped from the Marshal who arrested me for it."
"Why?"
"'Cause he was a bad guy."
"So, what the hell are you doing in Iowa?"
"I want to talk to my mother."
"You're going to have a really hard time doing that, because if you did what you just said you did, the fed's are going to be watching her 24/7."
"I'll figure something out."
"Oh, you will huh?"
"What, you want to help me?"
"Absolutely."
"Why?" Kate asks.
"I fell in love with the wrong guy and then I gave him my life savings. He conned me and embarrassed me. He was a bad guy. So, I'll help you get the meeting with your mom, Lucy, because one of us deserves something good.
Selling Bibles
Episode 3x15, Left Behind - Flashback Scene 4Cassidy, in a Kate wig, knocks on Diane's door. Diane opens the door and the Marshal and five other agents take her down.
"Long time no see, Austen," Marshal Mars says. He flips her over and pulls her glasses off. "Who the hell are you?"
"I'm just selling bibles," Cassidy says.
The Marshal opens her suitcase and sees the bibles. Kate watches though binoculars from a distance.
Later, Kate opens the hotel room door and lets Cassidy in. Cassidy takes off the wig and says they questioned her for half an hour. "He confiscated my case. He was asking me about selling bibles. Good thing I know how to lie."
"Now we know what we're up against, right?"
"Yeah, now we know that there were six guys waiting to take you down, Lucy."
"Yeah, it's okay. I'll figure it out."
"Figure it out? That Marshal, I don't know what you did to him, but if he ever gets his hands on you, it's going to be either him or you."
"Look, if you've changed your mind, if you don't want to help me anymore, I get it."
"No, I do want to help you. But if I'm lying to federal agents, Lucy, so that you can have a chat with your mom, then I at least need to know that there's a pretty good reason."
"He used to get drunk and beat up my mom. So I blew up his house. I made it look like an accident, a gas leak. Took out an insurance policy on the house. For her. Set her up for life. And then she gave me up. Chose him over me. So the reason I need to talk to her is, someone I love, someone who's supposed to care about me betrayed me, and I want to know why."
"Well then, let's go find out."
