Young Kate
Episode 5x16, The IncidentYoung Kate and young Tom are outside a store. Tom has the toy plane. "Are you going to do it?" Kate asks.
"Uh uh. You do it," Tom says.
"Fine, I'll do it. But you're going to be lookout, okay?"
"Okay."
They walk into the store. Tom watches the owner talk to a woman as Kate slips a lunch box into her backpack and the two walk to the door. The owner stops them and asks what they have. He tells Kate to open her bag and he pulls out the lunch box. "Where'd you get this?"
"I got it over there," she says.
"I know you," he says. "You're Diane Austen's girl. What's your name?"
"Katie."
"Well, Katie, I'm calling your mom, then the cops, because I don't tolerate stealing here. You understand?"
"No need to do that," a man says. "I'll pay for it. I hope this is enough." He hands the clerk the money. It's Jacob.
"Well, as long as somebody pays for it," the clerk says, "guess there's no harm done." To Kate he says, "But I don't want to see you in here ever again without your parents. You understand me?"
Kate nods. The clerk walks away and Kate says to Jacob, "Thanks, Mister."
"You're welcome." He bends to her level. "You're not going to steal anymore, are you?"
She shakes her head and he touches her nose. "Be good, Katie."
Zippo

She helps the man, Wayne, inside and lays him on the bed. She takes off his shoes and socks. He tells her she is beautiful. She starts to cover him and he says, "Aren't you going to take my pants off first?" He grabs her arm and says, "You are beautiful."
She jerks her arm away and says, "Goodnight."
Kate gets on her motorcycle, pauses a moment, then drives off. Moments later, the house explodes.
Kate goes to a diner and her mother is working. She asks Kate, "Coffee, pie, or both?"
"How 'bout a beer?" Kate says.
Diane says, "I'd like to see some I.D."
"I'm twenty-four, Ma."
Diane tells Kate that if she wants to ride around on that death trap without a helmet, Diane is not helping her by getting her drunk. Kate asks how her mother's wrist is and Diane starts to give her an excuse. Kate stops her.
"I made my bed, Katherine," Diane says.
"Well, your bed's gone, Ma."
Kate gives her an envelope and says it's an insurance policy for the house.
"What did you do?" Diane asks. "Does Wayne know about this?"
Kate gets up to leave. "Just remember that you were here and you didn't see me, okay?"
"Katherine, what did you do?"
"I took care of you, Ma. I've got to go and you're not going to see me for awhile." Kate hugs her and leaves while Diane is still asking what she did.
I Knew You'd Kill Him
Episode 2x9, What Kate Did - Flashback Scene 4Kate enters the U.S. Army recruiting office and approaches the desk of Sergeant Sam Austen. Sam sees her and gets off the phone. "Hi, Dad," she says.
"Kate," he says, "the police and the U.S. Marshals are looking for you. You shouldn't have come here."
She says they are not there, she'd been waiting outside for two hours. He asks if it's true, what they've been saying. And she says, "Why didn't you tell me, Dad?"
He asks what and she says, "I was making a scrapbook, a surprise for your birthday. So I called one of your COs to get some pictures of you in uniform. The pictures that he sent me had dates on the back, photos of you in Korea up until four months before I was born. Why didn't you tell me that Wayne was my father? Why?"
"I didn't tell you," he says, "because I knew you'd kill him. And your mother loved him. You were five years old. I wanted to take you along with me. She wouldn't let me."
"So why didn't you kill him?" she wants to know.
"Because I don't have murder in my heart." He says he has to call the police and she asks that he give her an hour. They hug and she tells him goodbye.
