Hurley goes up to the counter and the girl there seems happy to see him. "Hugo!"
"Starla," he says.
"Why aren't you chuckleheads at work?" she asks.
Johnny comes up and says, "We're currently exploring other opportunities."
She says that they are messing with her world view. Hurley is her rock and if he quits, the world will fall apart. He asks her if she wants to go out on Friday, but she quickly shoots him down, saying she has to work. He downplays the invitation, but she says, "I could probably go Saturday. Is that cool?"
"Yeah, that's totally cool," Hurley says.
As they walk out, Johnny asks what's gotten into him. He'd been crushing on Starla for months.
Hurley says, "Nothing, I just wanted to ask her out before..."
"Before what?"
"Nothing," Hurley says.

The two talk about what a great time they've had and Hurley begs Johnny, "Promise me, that no matter what happens, we'll never change. This will never change."

Grandpa Tito

He introduces his family, his mom, Carmen, his brother Diego, and his sister-in-law, Lisa. Then he acknowledges the older gentleman beside him and says, "This is the greatest guy I know, my grandpa, Tito. He's worked 3 jobs for...how long has it been now?"
Tito answers that it's been 52 years and Hurley says that he's 70 years old and the closest thing he's had to a vacation is when they put a pacemaker in him four years ago. Hurley plans to send him on a cruise and then make big plans when he comes back.
Suddenly, Tito keels over, dead.
Curses
Episode 1x18, Numbers - Flashback 3Hurley is in a yellow Hummer with his mother, driving through an upscale neighborhood. She says she doesn't like surprises and he says she'll like this one.
She's been through a lot, Hurley says, "Like Grandpa, and then at the funeral, Father Aguilar getting struck by lightening. Man that was a freak storm. And Diego moving back home after Lisa left him for that waitress."
"Don't mention that whore to me," she says.
Hurley says that ever since he won the lottery bad things have happened. He thinks the money is cursed or something. His mother hits him in the arm, "That's blasphemy." Catholics don't believe in curses.
As they get close to their destination, Hurley asks his mother to put on a blindfold. He stops in front of a huge house and goes around to the passenger side of the car. He tells his mother to take off the blindfold and see her new house. She trips and we hear her ankle snap.
She complains about her ankle and then says, "Hugo, do you smell smoke?"
Hurley sees the reflection of fire in the upstairs window. He pulls out his phone to call 911, but before he does, the police arrive. He looks at his phone, confused.
The police grab him and push him face first onto the Hummer. They cuff him and read him his rights. He looks at his mother, "No such thing as curses, huh Ma?"
The Numbers
Episode 1x18, Numbers - Flashback 4Hurley is with his accountant, who tells him that all of his stocks are up. His interest in orange futures skyrocketed after tropical storms in Florida, and he has a very lucrative box company. His sneaker company in Canada burned, killing eight people, but it was over-insured, so he'll make money on that too.
"And," the accountant says, "when we add in the generous settlement from the LAPD for your false arrest, you almost doubled your net worth in a few short months."
Hurley believes the money is bad luck, but the accountant says that a lot of lottery winners think that and he believes in numbers. He asks Hurley where he got the numbers, if it was someone's birthday or what.
Hurley realizes that it's not the money, it's the numbers. "The numbers are cursed. Dude, don't look at me like that. I'm not crazy."
"Hugo," he says, "the numbers aren't cursed. You know there is no such thing as-"
Someone from a higher floor passes by the window as he falls to the ground.
