Make Your Own Luck
Episode 3x10, Tricia Tanaka is Dead - Flashback 1A stereo plays a song and young Hurley walks down the steps with a toolbox. He puts the toolbox in front of a Camero and lays out tools.
His father comes out with a duffel bag. "You got this thing running yet, buddy?"
"Nah, but I got your tools all set."
"Let's see if we can get this thing started, okay?"
"I thought we needed a new carburetor," Hurley says.
"Slide behind the wheel."
Dad hands Hurley the keys. Hurley closes his eyes and turns the key in the ignition. The car doesn't start. He looks at his dad and says, "This is stupid. Without a carburetor it's never going to work."
"Having hope is never stupid," his father says. "You've got to believe that good things will happen and then they will. You understand what I'm saying?"
Hurley nods.
"In this world, son, you've got make your own luck."
"Well," Hurley says, "what do you want to fix today?"
"We're going to have to put that on hold for a little while. I've got to go to Vegas. I got some work out there."
"What about the road trip?" Hurley asks.
"The Grand Canyon will still be there when I get back, little dude."
His dad gives him a candy bar. "I'm not supposed to," Hurley says, "Mom says."
"Live a little, Hugo, it's just a candy bar." Hurley's dad tells him to hold down the fort, then he gets on his motorcycle, waves, and drives away.
Dr. Brooks
Episode 2x18, Dave - Flashback 1"How's the diet coming, Hugo?"
Hurley is staring off to the side. He looks forward and says, "It's okay. I had a salad and some chicken breast for lunch."
"That's great," the doctor says. "It gets easier, I promise. So, I heard you had a visit with your mom. How'd that go?"
Hurley shrugs. "It was good."
"You're not still mad at her, then?"
"Nah," Hurley says. "I know she put me in here for a reason."
"What reason was that?" the doctor asks.
"The accident."
"Do you want to talk about that today?" the doctor asks.
"Do we have to?"
"Hugo, you've been in here almost two months, now. Don't you think it's about time to start getting our hands dirty?"
Hurley doesn't answer and the doctor leans forward and says that they should talk about the homework assignment.
"I was never really good at homework."
Hurley was supposed to make a list of things that he likes about himself. He says that nobody else did it, and the doctor asks who. Hurley says, "Well Dave didn't do it. He said it was a stupid idea."
"Well, I'm not Dave's doctor, but we have talked about how he could be a very negative influence."
"Dave's the most normal person in this place, man," Hurley says.
"But he doesn't want you to change, does he?"
Hurley leaves the doctor and goes to the gym where some of the other patients are playing basketball. Bathrobe guy is there, wearing the same plaid bathrobe and pajamas. He asks if Hurley wants in the game.
Hurley says no and he asks what's wrong. Hurley doesn't answer so bathrobe guy, Dave, says, "It's taco night, let's blow this Popsicle stand."
Hurley says, "Brooks says you're, like, negative."
"Well duh," Dave says. "So you don't want to hang out with me anymore?"
"Nah, I don't know, it's just-"
"Is that quack getting in your head, man? Don't let him. You've got much more important things to worry about."
"Like what?"
"Like hard or soft shell. Chicken or shrimp. Sour cream or hot sauce."
"Yeah, I guess I could eat," Hurley says.
Celery vs. Crackers
Episode 2x18, Dave - Flashback 2Dave watches Hurley and Leonard play Connect Four while Leonard repeats the numbers over and over.
Leonard wins and Dave says, "You're using those magic numbers as a psych out, man."
"They're just numbers, Dude," Hurley says as he grabs a celery stalk and bites into it.
"What the hell is that?" Dave asks.
"It's my mid-afternoon snack," Hurley says.
"Dude, it's celery. That's not a snack. Leonard's got graham crackers, man, you should snag one. What's he going to do? Call you a 23?" Hurley grabs one. A nurse comes over and gives Hurley his meds. Dave tells him not to take it. Dave says that he and Hurley are going to escape.
Dr. Brooks walks up and says, "Hugo, hey there. Something wrong with your meds?"
"Uh, no. Me and Dave were just talking about stuff."
Brooks says hello to Dave and he says that he's taking some pictures for the bulletin board and he has everyone except the two of them.
He tells them to get closer together and takes their picture. He asks Hurley if he needs water with his meds and Hurley says, "Nope, I'm good," and takes them.
Dave looks disappointed and Hurley sticks out his tongue to reveal the pills. "The revolution has begun," Dave says. "Lay low, when the time is right we fly."
