Eko’s Flashbacks Part 2

A Look at Eko's Pre-Crash Life

By Bonnie Covel, About.com

Lives You Will Save

Episode 2x10, The 23rd Psalm - Flashback Scene 4
Eko bursts in on Yemi as he hears confession. Yemi asks those in the church to leave and then says, "How dare you come here and disrupt my work."

Eko wants Yemi to sign some ordination documents to make Eko and the other thugs priests so that they can deliver the drugs themselves. In exchange he will give Yemi the money for the vaccines.

Yemi tells him to leave the church.

"Yemi, I understand that you live in a world where righteousness and evil seem very far apart, but that is not the real world. I am your brother and I would never do anything to hurt you, but my friends, if you do not do what I ask, they will burn this church to the ground. Is that worth less than the price of your name on a piece of paper? Think of the lives you will save."

After a long stare down, Yemi snatches the paper out of Eko's hand and signs the ordination. "My signature does not make you a priest, Eko. You could never be a priest."

Eko asks how many Virgin Mary statues are left and takes all 300. He offers his brother a pile of money, but Yemi doesn't take it, so Eko sets the money down on a bible. "I guess we're both sinners now," Eko says.

"Perhaps we are, but God will forgive me, Eko."

Save Eko's Life

Episode 2x10, The 23rd Psalm - Flashback Scene 5
A plane idles on the runway. Eko and the other men are dressed as priests. The man standing guard says he sees something. It's a van driving up. Yemi gets out of the van.

"What are you doing here, Yemi," Eko asks.

"I came to stop you."

"Go back to your church," Eko says.

"Do not get on that plane, Eko," Yemi says. "You saved my life once and now I'm here to save yours." Yemi continues to beg Eko not to get on the plane.

A truck full of soldiers comes speeding up. "He called the military," one of Eko's men says.

"You did this?" Eko asks Yemi.

"I did not tell them who was involved. Just leave the drugs and come back with me."

Eko's men shoot at the truck. The soldiers shoot back and one of Eko's men is killed. Yemi runs in front, yelling at the soldiers, "No! Stop! No more!"

Yemi gets shot and Eko runs to him. He asks one of his men to help him get Yemi on the plane. He does, but then when Eko tries to climb in, the man kicks him to the ground, closes the door, and the plane flies away.

Father Eko

Episode 2x10, The 23rd Psalm - Flashback Scene 6
At the runway, Eko is on the ground, looking up at the plane flying away. A solider runs to him and says, "Father? Are you okay, Father?"

The Church

Episode 3x5, The Cost of Living - Flashback Scene 2 Eko rides in the back of a truck with the soldiers who were at the runway when the drug plane took off. "You're home, Father," one of them says.

Eko jumps out of the truck and looks around. He goes into the church where he was when he was a child, the church where Yemi was the priest.

He looks over at the bible sitting on the bench under the curtain. He picks it up and opens it to a picture of two boys, him and Yemi. He fights back tears.

A woman and young boy come in. The woman says she was looking for Father Yemi.

"Father Yemi is gone. He was called away quite suddenly."

She smiles and curtsies. "I am Amina. I work at the clinic. This is my son Daniel, he's an alter boy here. Are you taking his place?"

Eko says that he is.

"Will Father Yemi still go to London?"

"London?" Eko asks.

"He was going at the end of the week. He was going to continue his studies."

"I will take his place there, too."
