Desmond Meets Libby
Episode 2x23, Live Together, Die Alone - Flashback 2Desmond is at a coffee shop. He is carrying a large duffel bag. "Can I have whichever one has the most caffeine in it, brother?" He opens his wallet. "I'm sorry," he says. "I just arrived and I spent all my American money on a taxi."
"I've got it," a red-haired woman says and puts some money on the counter.
"Uh, that's not necessary," Desmond says.
"It's just four bucks," the woman says and we see that it's Libby, with short red hair.
"I don't suppose you have 42 thousand more of those, do you?"
"Depends on what it's for," Libby says.
"I was joking."
"No you weren't."
Desmond and Libby sit and have coffee. He shows her a brochure for the International Open Ocean Racing Association.
"So, a sailing race around the world?" Libby asks.
"I've got eight months to get into the best shape of my life. I'll tell you what, Miss, I'm going to win."
"And what do you get if you do?"
"What really matters is who I'll win it from." He flips the brochure over. On the back is a picture of Charles Widmore next to his name and title of Industrialist, Philanthropist.
"Charles Widmore."
"He tried to buy me off. And when I didn't take his money, he took away the only thing in the world that I ever truly cared about."
"Who is she?"
"His daughter. I was unsuitable on several levels."
"And what's the 42 grand for?" Libby asks.
"It's rather complicated. As of yet, I don't have a boat."
Libby gets a faraway look and he says, "I'm sorry, did I say something wrong?"
"I have a boat. It was my husband's, but he got sick. He wanted to sail to the Mediterranean. He passed away. About a month ago."
"I'm sorry."
"I want you to have it."
"I can't take your boat, Miss."
"But you have to. He'd want you to."
"What was your husband's name?"
"David."
"And what did he name his boat?"
"Elizabeth. He named it after me."
"Then I thank you, Elizabeth, and I shall win this race for love."
Desmond Talks to Penny
Episode 2x23, Live Together, Die Alone - Flashback 3Desmond is at the stadium. He puts his pants in the trunk and has on his shorts and running shoes. Jack drives up and begins to run in the stadium. Another car pulls up and Desmond turns around to see the girl from the photograph.
"How did you find me?" he asks.
"A man from your flat said you run here every-"
"How did you find me?"
"I have a lot of money, Desmond. With enough money and determination you can find anyone. Did you read your beloved book? The one you were saving?"
"Not yet."
"I thought you may have read it while you were away."
"I was in prison," Desmond says, "Not away."
Penny's eyes well up. "Why didn't you write me?"
Desmond shakes his head. "When are you getting married, Pen?"
"We haven't set a date yet."
"I'll be back in a year."
"What if you were back right now?" she asks.
"I'm going to win this race, Pen. His race. And in a year, I'll be back." He wipes a tear from her face.
"Desmond, what are you running from?"
"I have to get my honor back. And that's what I'm running to."
Desmond Ends Up on the Island
Episode 2x23, Live Together, Die Alone - Flashback 4Desmond is on his sailboat in extremely bad weather. He ties the steering, then goes in the cabin and grabs his book and a few other things. He goes back up and gets hit in the head.
He washes up on the beach and has a hard time focusing on the man who drags him into the hatch. The man is covered in a yellow suit and a black mask. He takes off his mask in the hatch and says to Desmond, "Are you him?"
"What?" Desmond asks.
"What did one snowman say to the other?"
"What are you talking about?" Desmond asks.
The man looks crushed.
"Who are you?" Desmond asks.
"I'm Inman. Kelvin Inman."
"What happened to my boat?" Desmond asks.
"I found you washed up on the beach. There's no boat."
The timer begins to beep and Kelvin looks annoyed. He goes to the computer and types in the numbers. The timer resets.
"What was all that about, then?" Desmond asks.
"Just saving the world," Kelvin says.
Later, Desmond watches the Orientation film over and over. "How many times you going to watch that thing?" Kelvin asks.
"Why are there missing parts?"
"Radsinski made some edits." Kelvin has on his yellow suit and is taping the suit around his wrists where it meets his gloves.
"Who's Radsinski?"
"He was my partner."
"What happened to him?"
"Just make sure you put that back when you're done with it."
"Why do you wear that suit?" Desmond asks.
"So I don't get infected out there." He opens up a case and gets out a vaccine and the vaccine gun. "Give yourself a shot of this every nine days. You were out there a while before I found you. Hope it's not too late."
