Kate's Flashback - Daddy
Kate enters the U.S. Army recruiting office and approaches the desk of Sergeant Sam Austen. Sam sees her and gets off the phone. "Hi, Dad," she says."Kate," he says, "the police and the U.S. Marshals are looking for you. You shouldn't have come here."
She says they are not there, she'd been waiting outside for two hours. He asks if it's true, what they've been saying. And she says, "Why didn't you tell me, Dad?"
He asks what and she says, "I was making a scrapbook, a surprise for your birthday. So I called one of your COs to get some pictures of you in uniform. The pictures that he sent me had dates on the back, photos of you in Korea up until four months before I was born. Why didn't you tell me that Wayne was my father? Why?"
"I didn't tell you," he says, "because I knew you'd kill him. And your mother loved him. You were five years old. I wanted to take you along with me. She wouldn't let me."
"So why didn't you kill him?" she wants to know.
"Because I don't have murder in my heart," Sam says.He says he has to call the police and she asks that he give her an hour. They hug and she tells him goodbye.
Sawyer's Back
Kate talks to Sawyer. "Sawyer? Wayne?" she says. He stirs and she says, "I'm probably crazy and this doesn't matter, but maybe you're in there somehow. But you asked me a question. You asked me why I did it. It wasn't because you drove my father away, or the way you looked at me, or because you beat her. It's because I hated that you were a part of me, that I would never be good. That I would never have anything good. And every time that I look at Sawyer, every time I feel something for him, I see you, Wayne. It makes me sick."Sawyer says, "That's about the sweetest thing I've ever heard."
"Sawyer?" Kate says.
"Who the hell's Wayne," he asks. He opens his eyes. "I'm in a bunk bed? Are we saved?"
"No, Sawyer. Not yet."
In another room, Locke and Eko splice the film together. Locke wonders at the odds of the two of them crashing on different parts of the island, finding each other, and having two parts of the same film.
Eko says, "Don't mistake coincidence for fate."
Kate gives Sawyer a tour of the hatch. All the while he is convinced that they have been rescued, so she takes him outside and there is the familiar jungle. She sees the horse, only this time, Sawyer sees it too. Kate approaches the horse and it nuzzles her before walking away.
Sawyer asks if she knows that horse and she says yes.
Jack and Ana-Lucia
Jack brings Ana-Lucia some tequila and says she can use a drink. "Are you going to try to convince me that everyone here doesn't hate me?""Only if you're going to try to convince me that every woman in the world's not crazy."
The Computer
Michael messes around, looking at the computer while Locke and Eko watch the film they just spliced together.Dr. Candle talks about not using the computer for anything other than entering the code and the new piece of film says, "This is its only function. The isolation that attends the duties associated with Station Three may tempt you to try and utilize the computer for communication with the outside world. This is strictly forbidden. Attempting to use the computer in this manner will compromise the integrity of the project and worse, could lead to another incident. I repeat, do not use the computer for anything other than entering the code."
In the next room, the computer makes a sound. Michael looks at the timer and it's at 51 minutes, not yet time to enter the code. He hears the bing sound again. He looks at the monitor which has the word "Hello?" on it.
Michael types in "Hello?"
"Who is this?" shows up on the monitor.
Michael types, "This is Michael. Who is this?"
After a pause, on the monitor comes the word, "Dad?"
