Jack Wants Desmond to Explain What Is Going On

Desmond looks through the bookshelf for something. Locke tells Kate she doesn't need the gun anymore and she lowers it. Locke asks Desmond if he can help, but since he can't fix a computer, Desmond says no.

Kate points out that Sayid can fix a computer and Locke tells her to go get him. She asks about a door and Desmond tells her it's down the corridor on the left and to be persistent because the wheel sticks.

Desmond finds a jar and grabs it. "Gotcha," he says. Desmond and Locke run back to the computer. Jack swipes the jar and says, "Now you're going to tell me what's going on."

Locke tells Jack they don't have time for this, but Jack says they are taking a time out. Desmond explains that three years ago he was on a solo race around the world and his boat crashed into the reef. Kelvin ran out of the jungle.

Locke asks about Kelvin and Desmond says that Kelvin brought him there and taught him how to type in the code. Kelvin said he was saving the world.

"So I started pushing the button, too," Desmond says. "And we saved the world together for awhile, and that was lovely. Then Kelvin died and now here I am all alone. The end."

Jack hands the jar over and Desmond tries to fix the computer. To Locke, Jack says, "Don't tell me you believe this. This is crazy. You think that makes sense? Pushing a button? You're going to take his word for it?"

"His word is all we have," Locke says.

Desmond says, "You don't have to take my word for it. Watch the film." He tells them to look on the top shelf of the bookcase and that the projector is in the pantry. Locke and Jack find the film in a metal film canister with the Dharma logo on it. On the side is a label that says "Orientation".

Kate Yells for Help

People are setting up camp on the beach again. Hurley stops playing with Vincent to help Sayid lug something across the beach.

Kate runs onto the beach, yelling for Sayid that they need his help.

A Girl in the Pit

Sawyer asks Jin what he knows, who they are, and what they did to him. Michael asks if he saw Walt. Jin motions and Michael says he was blindfolded.

"There could be a hundred of them out there. Push me up," Sawyer says. They push Sawyer up and he tries to open the cover, but it's weighted. A knife pokes in through the cover, and Sawyer falls. The cover opens and a girl is thrown in. It's Ana-Lucia, the girl Jack had a drink with before getting on the plane.

Impossible

As Jack and Locke set up the film, Jack asks what happened down there before he showed up. Locke says that Kate was tied up and Desmond had a gun on him. "Desmond," Jack whispers to himself.

"He wanted to know a lot about us, how we got here, if we were sick," Locke says.

"You didn't ask anything about him?" Jack asks and Locke points out that Desmond was the one with the gun.

Jack says that Locke is calm for someone who thinks the world will end in 45 minutes and Locke just says that Desmond will fix it. Locke says, "Is the reason you're so upset because he said he recognized you? Because that would be impossible."

They start the film. The title screen has a swan with "The Dharma Initiative" written over it, and "3 of 6, Orientation" below. The film is grainy and old and skips a lot. An Asian man comes on, wearing a lab coat. He says, "Welcome, I'm Dr. Marvin Candle, and this is the Orientation film for Station 3 of the Dharma Initiative.

"In a moment you'll be given a simple set of instructions for how you and your partner will fulfill the responsibilities associated with the station. But first, a little history.

"The Dharma Initiative was created in 1970, and it is the brainchild of Gerald and Karen DeGroot, two doctoral candidates at the University of Michigan. Following in the footsteps of visionaries such as B.F. Skinner-"

The film skips and picks up mid sentence, "...imagined a large scale communal research compound where scientists and free thinkers from around the globe could pursue research in meteorology, psychology, parapsychology, zoology, electromagnetism, and utopian social-"
