The Hatch

There is a weird noise and Charlie searches for Eko. He sees him on the ground under some debris. "Eko?"

Charlie moves the debris.

Inside, the timer is down to four minutes. Desmond is still looking at the printout. "We need to push the button."

"No we don't," Locke says.

"Didn't you hear me, brother? I crashed your bloody plane!"

"How did you manage to do that?"

"On that day," Desmond points to the timer, "those numbers turned to hieroglyphics. And when that last one went down, this whole place began to shake. And that screen said system failure. And I know what they are. 92204, September the 22nd, 2004. The day your plane crashed. It's real, it's all bloody real!"

"No, I know what I saw. It's not real. None of this is real."

"You don't want to push the button," Desmond says, "then I will."

Locke picks up the computer and throws it on the ground.

"You've killed us. You've killed us all," Desmond says.

"No, I've just saved us all."

Desmond moves the ping pong table and grabs his book. Charlie comes in and says, "Hey, can you help me?"

"I'm trying, brother."

Desmond's Flashback - Locke

Desmond looks at his gun and takes a swig of booze. He pulls out his book and opens it. A letter falls out. It's from Penny.
Dearest Des,
I'm writing this letter to you as you leave for prison, and I've hidden it in the one place you would turn to in a moment of great desperation. I know you go away with the weight of what happened on your shoulders, and I know that the only person who can ever take it off is you.

Please don't give up, Des, because the only thing we really need to survive is one person who loves us and you have her. I will wait for you always.

I love you, Pen

Desmond holds the letter and cries. "It's gone," he says and throws the booze. "It's all gone!" He tears apart the book shelves and falls to the floor. Then he hears banging.

Outside the hatch, Locke is yelling. Desmond looks up and shines a light. Then he smiles.

Fail Safe

Desmond gets his book and opens it and takes out Kelvin's key. He kisses the key and runs into the computer room. Thirty seconds remain on the timer. Desmond moves some things out of the way and opens the door on the floor.

"Three days before you came down here, I heard a banging on the hatch door, shouting," Desmond says. "But it was you, John, wasn't it? You say there is no purpose, there's no such thing as fate. But you saved my life, brother, so that I could save yours."

"No!" Locke says. "None of this is real! Nothing is going to happen, we're going to be okay."

"I've got to go, and you've got to get as far away from here as possible."

"Go where? Stop!" Locke says.

"I'm going to blow the dam, John. I'm sorry for whatever happened that made you stop believing." The timer gets to zero and the hieroglyphics come up. "But it's all real. And now I've got to go and make it all go away."

Desmond jumps down and Locke says, "Wait, Desmond."

"I'll see you in another life, brother."

The last hieroglyphic comes up and the warning says System Failure.

Charlie tries to get Eko up. Suddenly medal pots and pans and silverware and darts fly past them and stick to the wall. Weights and food cans come towards them.

Below, Desmond opens the security system.

Eko pushes Charlie out of the way and goes to find John.

The timer inverts from the pressure.

Locke looks at Eko and says, "I was wrong."
Below, Desmond puts the key in the key hole. He remembers Penny saying "All we really need to survive is one person who truly loves us and you have her. I will wait for you always. I love you."

"I love you, Penny," Desmond says and turns the key. Everything goes white. On the other side of the island, the four, Michael, and the Others hear a loud sound. On the sailboat, Sayid, Sun, and Jin cover their ears and are covered by a bright white light.

Non-Henry looks angry. On the main beach, people cover their ears and fall to the ground. The noise stops and something falls from the sky towards Claire and the baby. Bernard pushes them to safety and the hatch door lands in the sand.

The Aftermath

They go about putting things back together on the beach. Charlie strolls in and Claire smiles. Bernard asks if he's okay.

Charlie yells, "It's hard to tell. My ears."

"Where's Eko, Locke?" Bernard asks.

"They're not back yet?"

"No," Bernard says.

Charlie sees Claire watching him. He smiles and she smiles back.
