Marked Ground
Eko climbs the cliff. "Eko," Locke shouts, "be careful!"Eko has a hard time climbing with the axe and almost falls. At the top he looks around and sees beautiful island scenary, but nothing that seems significant.
"What's up there? Do you see anything?" Locke yells.
"I don't see nothing-" Eko's words cut off when he turns and looks down at Locke. He sees a circle where nothing has grown.
On the ground, Eko feels the dirt of the circle and tastes it. "The earth has been salted so that nothing can grow."
"Why would anyone want to salt it? There's nothing here," Locke says.
Eko points to the sky. "I believe they made a circle so that this place can be seen from up above."
"They? What place?"
"The place that this plane fell upon, John. Come on."
Eko goes around the plane and hits the ground with his axe, until it falls upon metal. Locke and Eko move the plane out of the way and uncover a set of doors that lead into the ground.
Eko uses the axe to open the latch, then he starts to lift the doors.
Locke stops him. "Eko, may I?"
"Please, be my guest," Eko says and steps aside.
Locke opens the doors and they peer down into a deep hole with a ladder leading inside.
Date
Jack breaks the Virgin Mary and gets out the heroin as Sawyer, Kate, and Michael look on."We were going to have our first date," Hurley says.
"Date?" Michael says.
"Yeah. A picnic on the beach." He looks at Michael. "I'm glad you're okay, man."
The New Hatch
Eko and Locke climb down the ladder. Eko shines the flashlight on a Dharma logo with a circle in the middle. They see three columns of TVs with three TVs in each column. Two captains chairs face the TVs, and what looks like a cigarette and some cigarette butts are on the table next to the chairs.
Locke flips switches, seeing if any of the TVs come on. Only one shows anything. It's the Swan Hatch. They watch as Jack walks through the kitchen area.
Locke looks up and sees a camera. On a computer screen in green lettering it says: PRINT LOG? Y/N. A flashing green insert bar is at the end. John types "Y" and hits the execute button.
He hears a noise and startles. Eko had opened a cabinet and the door fell off.
Locke turns back to a dot matrix printer and looks at the printout. It's a bunch of number streams: 41602108:05 accepted.
Eko finds a stack of journals. He opens one, but it's empty.
Locke sees tubing that goes up and out of the ceiling. He puts his drawing of the diagram in the tube and closes the door. The diagram is pushed up and out of sight.
Eko finds an Orientation video. They put it in the VCR. The title is:
The Dharma Initiative

Orientation
The next screen is the Dharma logo with a white circle in the center. It says:
ORIENTATION - STATION 5 - THE PEARL
The film begins with Dr. Marvin Candle standing in The Pearl Station. He says, "Hello, I am Dr. Mark Wickman, and this is the Orientation Video for the Dharma Initiative. Station Five, or The Pearl, is a monitoring station where the activities of the participants in The Dharma Initiative projects can be observed and recorded, not only for prosperity, but for the ongoing refinement of the initiative as a whole. As Karen DeGroot herself has written, careful observation is the only key to true and complete awareness." As he is saying this, the video shows the DeGroots watching a group of people in Dharma clothing doing jumping-jacks.
"Your tour of duty in The Pearl will last three weeks and during this time you and your partner will observe a psychological experiment in progress. Your duty is to observe team members in another station on the island."
Locke looks at the TV screen that shows The Swan and watches Jack walk by. "These team members are not aware of the surveillance or that they are the subjects of an experiment.
