Jack Prepares for a Trade
Jack walks out, packing a bag. "I'm not so sure trading people is their thing," Ana-Lucia says."Well, talking to him is getting us nowhere, so maybe we can get something for him."
"You want me to come with you?" Ana-Lucia asks.
Jack looks at Locke who is in the next room, sitting next to the computer writing something. "You need to stay here," he tells her and she gives him the gun.
Ana-Lucia tells him not to go out alone.
Prisoner Exchange Plan
Jack approaches Kate and Sawyer and says he's going out into the jungle to make a trade."Ah, the old prisoner exchange," Sawyer says. "And you're inviting me along because you want a gun."
"I'm not inviting you, I'm inviting Kate. And I've already got a gun, but thanks for offering."
Sawyer wants to know how he got a gun, but Jack doesn't tell him. Kate says she'll get her things, and she and Jack head off.
Bernard's Sign
A group of people surround Bernard. He's talking about being on the island for two months and they have a water trough, and a food pantry, and people are taking showers in the hatch."That pallet of food," Bernard says, "had a parachute. Which means a plane dropped it here, which means there are other planes. So we are going to build a sign, a massive sign along the beach. So that way if a plane flies over or a satellite takes pictures from up there, we want to make damn sure they can see us."
Rose walks up. "Maybe we should talk to Jack about this first."
"Well," Bernard says, "do we have to run everything by Jack? He's not the president, he's a doctor."
"You're a dentist," Rose says. People giggle and Bernard looks horrified. He takes Rose aside to talk to her.
Bernard wants to know what the harm is in building the sign. Rose says he's giving people false hope. He stomps away saying he has a sign to build. Rose looks ready to cry.
Bernard's Proposal, Rose's Confession
Rose and Bernard sit at a restaurant overlooking Niagara Falls. Rose admires the view, but Bernard is distracted, looking over her shoulder. She asks what he's doing.Violinists come over and begin to play. Bernard gets on one knee. "I've been a bachelor for 56 years, and then I met you. And we just fell into a rhythm, like we've known each other forever. I know it's crazy," Bernard says, "we just met five months ago." He pulls out a ring, "Rose, I love you. Will you marry me?"
"Bernard, I'm dying," she says.Bernard looks terrified and she says, "I'm sick and I'm dying."
Bernard excuses the violinists and sits down, staring at Rose.
"I've been in remission for the last couple of years. But now it's back, and this time it's not going away. My doctor says I have about a year, maybe a little longer."
Bernard stares at her and shakes his head, then says, "You haven't answered my question."
"Are you sure?" she asks and he says he's sure. "Yes," she says.
People Are Saved in Different Ways
Bernard approaches Charlie and Eko, who are building something on the beach. Bernard tells Eko, "What? You bunk with someone for 48 days and now he doesn't call or write?""Hello, Bernard," Eko says.
"What are you guys building?" Bernard asks.
"Just working," Eko says.
Bernard tells them about the sign and asks for their help. "Sorry, I'm busy," Eko says and Charlie wishes Bernard good luck.
Bernard asks if he can use some of the logs that Eko and Charlie have gathered and Eko says they are using them. "For what, exactly?" Bernard asks.
"Church," Charlie says.
Bernard gets mad because everyone on the island is building something and Bernard is trying to get them saved. Eko says, "People are saved in different ways, man."
"I think I liked you better when you just hit people with your stick," Bernard says and walks away.
Charlie says, "I like you just the way you are."
Was the Button Pushed?
Locke listens to a record and continues to try and recreate the diagram on a piece of paper. He gets upset and wads up the paper, then grabs his crutches and tells Ana-Lucia that he needs to talk to non-Henry.Ana-Lucia says that Jack has the gun, so the door stays closed, but that if Locke wants to talk to him, then he should talk to him.
Locke hobbles to the armory door and yells, "Henry, can you hear me?" He knocks. "It's John, Henry. Henry, did you enter the numbers? Did you push the button or not." Locke bangs on the door and yells louder. He yells for Henry to answer him as Ana-Lucia watches.
Inside the armory, Henry has a smirk on his face.
