"One of Them" Recap

Part 3

By Bonnie Covel, About.com

Punishment

Jack removes the arrow from Henry's shoulder. Locke thinks Henry sounds convincing and Sayid agrees. Locke says there is no way they can be sure Henry is telling the truth. Sayid asks if Jack knows the combination to the armory and wonders how long it would take to change it.

Locke says, "If you're angry, looking for someone punish-"

"Why would I need to punish anyone? I want to find out who he is. I want the truth. And I think we both know that Jack will have issues with what must be done in order to get it. So how long, John, to change the combination?"

Locke says a couple of minutes and gets started.

Sayid goes over to where Jack is still working on Henry. Sayid asks if Henry said anything and Jack says no. Locke says they can't leave him there where people will see him. It will create a panic. Sayid suggests the armory, and Jack agrees.

The three men carry Henry to the armory. Jack doesn't think Henry should stay on his back and when he steps out to get a cot, Sayid locks himself inside with Henry.

Sayid's Flashback - Torture

Sayid enters the room with Tariq, carrying the tool box Inman had given him. Tariq is surprised that they are letting Sayid speak to him alone. Sayid just asks where the pilot is.

Tariq says, "This is their new bluff? That you're going to torture me? They think you will do this? Sayid, you are a loyal soldier. The son of a great hero. Do not disgrace your father! You wouldn't dare harm me!"

Sayid takes out different tools and lays them on the table. Tariq says, "You will follow my orders as your commanding officer. Take that bag, put it over your head, and tape it up. Kill yourself, now! That's an order. Do it and die with what little honor you have left."

Sayid says, "You would have me take my own life? The information means nothing to you."

Tariq spits in Sayid's face. Sayid picks up some pliers.

Later, we see Inman pacing outside. Sayid goes out and says, "The pilot was executed two days ago. He's buried in a field four kilometers from here. I can take you there." When Sayid hands the box to Inman, his hands are covered in blood.

Sayid Tortures Henry

Jack tries unsuccessfully to get into the armory and asks Locke why he changed the combination.
Locke says, "You're raising an army, and why you didn't ask me to help, well, that's your business, but there's only one reason to raise an army, Jack, and that's because we're at war. And like it or not, whatever Sayid has to do behind that door, that's part of it too."

"What if he's telling the truth, John?"

"What if he's not?"

Inside the armory, Sayid ties up Henry and fires questions at him. Henry seems to know the answers and answers quickly. He says his wife got a fever and in two days she was delirious, then she died. Henry keeps asking who Sayid is.

Sayid finally answers, "I was 23 years old when the Americans came to my country. I was a good man. I was a soldier. And when I left I was something different. For the next six years I did things I wish I could erase from my memory, things which I never thought myself to be capable of. But I did come to learn this, there was a part of me which was always capable. You want to know who I am? My name is Sayid Jarrah, and I am a torturer."
