Charlie's Flashback - Charlie's Piano

Young Charlie in his bunny slippers comes down the stairs. Young Liam is already by the Christmas Tree, opening presents. Charlie searches for presents for himself, but all of the tags say "Liam".

Charlie's mom comes in and shows Charlie that his present is a large one under blankets and some wrapping. She removes the covering to reveal a piano.

Charlie asks if it's his and his mother says, "Father Christmas must have known how talented you are. You're special, love. Someday you're going to get us out of here."

Liam says, "Come on, baby brother." Charlie looks over and Liam is now an adult, but sitting in the same spot under the Christmas Tree and he's wearing a diaper. "You can't save us if you don't play."

Charlie, now an adult, sits at the piano, looking confused. His mother says, "Play me a tune."

Charlie turns to the piano and we hear a man's voice say, "He ain't saving no one, he ain't. Music. Music will never get you anywhere, Charlie boy."

We now see the man from the neck down, dressed as a butcher and chopping meat with a cleaver. Behind him, the butcher shop blends with the living room. Liam sits on the couch playing with a toy. The man puts a doll on the chopping block. He points the cleaver at Charlie. "You need a trade."

"Dad?" Charlie says. The man cuts the head off the doll.

Liam sarcastically says, "Do it, baby bro. Save us."

"Save us, Charlie. Save us," his mother says.

Charlie plays the piano and we hear the ocean in the background. Charlie is on the surf. He hears a baby crying and stops playing. "Aaron?"

It sounds like the baby is inside the piano. Charlie tries to open the lid, but can't. "Aaron! Aaron!"

The trees move and when Charlie looks back at the piano, it has fallen into the water and is washing out to sea.

Charlie wakes up. He is on the beach. He runs to Claire's shelter to see if Aaron is okay. He's not in his cradle and Claire is gone too. Sun points Claire and the baby out to Charlie. He is relieved to see them by the water.

Locke walks over to Claire and plays with the baby. They laugh and Charlie stares at them.

Claire Needs Space

Claire rocks Aaron in his cradle. Charlie brings her nappies that he'd made and asks if Aaron has been asking about him. He says he's sorry and that he should have told her about the statue. He wants to go back to how things were before.

"There is no before, Charlie," Claire says. "We were strangers on a plane and we became friends."

"Now Locke's your friend, huh?"

"Please, Charlie. Just for now give me some space, okay?"

Charlie's Flashback - Baby Megan

Charlie looks through the window of a hospital nursery at a baby girl. A woman comes in and Charlie asks why she's not laying down. "I just needed to see her again. Isn't she brilliant?"

"She's beautiful, Karen," Charlie says.

Karen says she named her Megan and asks where Liam is. Charlie doesn't know what to say and Karen says, "He's not here." Charlie tries to make up an excuse about Liam having a blown tire, but it seems this isn't the first time Liam wasn't where he was supposed to be.

Later, in his apartment, Charlie finds a cigarette burning on the piano and is mad as he snuffs it out. Liam is passed out on the couch. Charlie shakes him awake. "Hey, baby brother," Liam says in greeting.

Charlie says, "You're supposed to be cleaning up. Get up. I told Karen you missed your flight. She's all alone at the hospital and you're here fixing. What's the matter with you?"

Charlie cleans up Liam's drugs and Liam says not to worry, he left Charlie some. "Take a shower, get dressed, and get to the hospital," Charlie demands.

Liam starts to move and Charlie says, "Oh, by the way, you have a daughter. Her name's Megan."

"After Mum?" Liam smiles.

Charlie smiles too.

"Yeah," Charlie says, "after Mum. Now clean yourself up. You're a sodding father now."
